#4 of 10 in Parks in Pensacola
Perdido Key State Park is a 290acre Florida State Park located on a barrier island fifteen miles (24 km) southwest of Pensacola, off S.R. 292, in northwestern Florida. The address is 12301 Gulf Beach Highway.Perdido Key State ParkBarrier islands protect the Florida mainland from the harsh effects of storms and provide habitats for shorebirds and other coastal animals. The wide, white, sandy beaches and the rolling sand dunes covered with sea oats make this a pristine oasis along the rapidly developing panhandle. The beach, which provides excellent opportunities for swimming and sunbathing, is the focal point for public use of the park. Surf fishing is another popular activity. Boardwalks from the parking lot allow visitors to access the beach without causing damage to the fragile dunes and beach vegetation. Covered picnic tables overlooking the beach provide a great place for family outings. Located 15mi southwest of Pensacola, off State Road 292.Several endangered species inhabit, nest on or use this park. Most notable of these is the Perdido Key beach mouse. This mouse is one of the North America’s rarest mammals and only currently exists in two places on earth, both of which are located on Perdido Key. The Johnson Beach Unit of Gulf Islands National Seashore is the other location. The mouse was reintroduced to the park in February 2000 after several years of being absent from the park. Originally, three pairs of juvenile mice were translocated from Johnson Beach, followed by an additional 16 pairs of juvenile mice the following year. The population of this mouse can vary greatly depending on the time of year and recent weather conditions, as well as the presence of house cats.Loggerhead sea turtles use the beach to nest each year. Occasionally green and Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles will nest within the park boundary as well.

  • Great walking and views! No alligators on our visit, but enjoyed the looking. Surprised all bathrooms were locked!  more »
  • Lots of space per visitor here. I'm not a fan of the crowds in Myrtle Beach and such, so this is a great antidote. Wide open sand beaches with not many visitors.  more »
  • Clean, squeaky sand, lovely views. Pavilions are all connected by boardwalks and the bathrooms were kept clean too! I love visiting new state parks!  more »

  • We had our 5 and 4 yr old sons with us at the park....they had a blast! They wanted to "camp" there forever. Wonder of being young.
  • Pretty awesome beach. Not sooooo many people like the other beaches. Definitely will be one of our go to beaches when we visit on vacation.
  • Visited on a weekday at 5 pm to sunset. Pros: There were but 5 other people on the beach so it was quiet and peaceful. The sand was clean, white, cool and of fantastic texture. The water was warm and clear. Cons: I did not experience any though I did not use the restrooms.
  • I visited Christmas Day 2016.. Very beautiful place to go to!! The rangers were nice. this beach had dunes!!!!:)
  • Great place. Water was beautiful and the park was well maintained. Ranger stationed there was friendly and helpful.

Where to stay in Pensacola

You'll find places to stay throughout Pensacola, but reserve a place downtown for the best local atmosphere and access to nearby beaches. Downtown Pensacola is on the water, and it features a collection of inns and bed and breakfasts in historical buildings and upscale tower hotels. The national chain hotels and motels along Interstate 10 by the Davis Highway and Pensacola Blvd. exits provide budget-friendly options within driving distance of downtown. It might be tempting to choose one of the budget motels along Highway 90 just west of downtown, but these reside in a rundown area. If you're arriving to spend most of your time by the ocean, stay on Pensacola Beach or Perdido Key, which sit just outside the city limits.
