  • Nice fort to check. Its more in the historical end than architectural. When i went, it was self guided tour. The fort doesn’t have elaborative information at each interest point. Still worth it to check for the location and history.
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the fort. It's truly a marvel to see what people used for warfare and even survival long before modern technology came along.
  • It was really beautiful fort to walk around. It was extremely hot the day we visited, so no Ranger led tours. We took the paper guide and read through the things we wanted to learn about. I highly recommend it to anyone.
  • Great historical landmark and extremely friendly and knowledgeable staff!
  • Fort Barrancas is a phenomenal multi-national American historic site as it has been occupied by Spain, France, England, the Confederacy, and the United States. In 1559, Spain established a settlement in Florida on Pensacola Bay but the site was abandoned soon afterward. Spaniards revived the settlement in 1698, surrendered it to the French in 1719, regained it by treaty in 1722, ceded it to the English in 1763, and repossessed it by force in 1781. From 1839–1844, the historic Spanish fort on the hill was reconstructed. The US deactivated Fort Barrancas on April 15, 1947, following World War II.

Where to stay in Pensacola

You'll find places to stay throughout Pensacola, but reserve a place downtown for the best local atmosphere and access to nearby beaches. Downtown Pensacola is on the water, and it features a collection of inns and bed and breakfasts in historical buildings and upscale tower hotels. The national chain hotels and motels along Interstate 10 by the Davis Highway and Pensacola Blvd. exits provide budget-friendly options within driving distance of downtown. It might be tempting to choose one of the budget motels along Highway 90 just west of downtown, but these reside in a rundown area. If you're arriving to spend most of your time by the ocean, stay on Pensacola Beach or Perdido Key, which sit just outside the city limits.
