  • Spent a beautiful day engaging in the historical significance & beauty of the Fort. Clean and a great place for family to play together...something for all.  more »
  • If you go to the lighthouse drive down the road a few blocks to see this fort, I enjoyed Ft Pickens more but was glad I stopped to see Fort also, lots of history to learn about the civil war days.  more »
  • There are so many movies that depict fort battles. You drive to this fort on the base, park and are immediately on the battle site. Every aspect of the fort (outside) is available to view. Protective ...  more »

  • Fort Barrancas is a phenomenal multi-national American historic site as it has been occupied by Spain, France, England, the Confederacy, and the United States. In 1559, Spain established a settlement in Florida on Pensacola Bay but the site was abandoned soon afterward. Spaniards revived the settlement in 1698, surrendered it to the French in 1719, regained it by treaty in 1722, ceded it to the English in 1763, and repossessed it by force in 1781. From 1839–1844, the historic Spanish fort on the hill was reconstructed. The US deactivated Fort Barrancas on April 15, 1947, following World War II.
  • This is a definite Pensacola attraction. Excellent spot to picnic at. The actual fort is an architectural wonder, to me, the surrounding natural setting is very pleasant.
  • Awesome time a must if you're in Pensacola
  • Really neat old fort, that they have done a great job restoring, and preserving for everyone to see.
  • Awesome historic site and museum - great tours too

Where to stay in Pensacola

You'll find places to stay throughout Pensacola, but reserve a place downtown for the best local atmosphere and access to nearby beaches. Downtown Pensacola is on the water, and it features a collection of inns and bed and breakfasts in historical buildings and upscale tower hotels. The national chain hotels and motels along Interstate 10 by the Davis Highway and Pensacola Blvd. exits provide budget-friendly options within driving distance of downtown. It might be tempting to choose one of the budget motels along Highway 90 just west of downtown, but these reside in a rundown area. If you're arriving to spend most of your time by the ocean, stay on Pensacola Beach or Perdido Key, which sit just outside the city limits.
