Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, Papaikou

#5 of 90 in Parks in Island of Hawaii
Enjoy greenery, cascading waterfalls, and views of the ocean at Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden. The garden's fertile, volcanic soil benefits the growth of more than 2,000 tropical species, including an extraordinary collection of palm trees and bromeliads. The garden also functions as a preservation center for tropical plants that have been jeopardized by rain forest destruction. The trek is easy and leisurely, thanks to boardwalks with benches on most trails. Parking is free, and the garden provides umbrellas if it's raining. Because the garden is in a natural valley where temperatures might get quite hot, it's a good idea to bring water and insect repellent. • A tropical paradise! We meandered for hours on a self guided tour through the tropical rainforest, waterfalls, exotic plants and along the rugged coast. While many species are not native to Hawaii, th...  more »

  • Stunning beautiful and quite large. Beats most large botanical gardens in Mainland since they have so much variety that naturally thrives in the area. What most impressed me was that they have orchids that hug the trees and can grow like that naturally. (If you have any experience with orchids like me, they need a lot of care and are like kids almost.) $20/person. Also they have a water fall and an ocean view. One thing that was slightly comical was that the bike path crossed directly through the park and the map said "by state law illegal to enter park through bike path". But technically you have to momentarily enter the bike path (ie cross) and then re-enter the park on the other side to access the ocean view. Just curious what the legal workaround for that is?
  • This was a very pleasant detour from the trip going to the volcano park. The walk is quite pleasant, but it is fairly steep. The orchids that are all around are very nice -- I had never seen them in the wild before. There are a couple of nice waterfalls. We were here in November, and even though we had mosquito repellent, we ended up not needing it. They also provide umbrellas. This is a private park, maintained by a small group and they do charge about twenty bucks per adult. It is quite nice.
  • This is a very beautiful place that meanders through lush greenery and flower gardens and a river all the way down to the ocean. The pathways are pretty easy to walk, our 3, 5, and 8 year olds had no problems going up or down. It's a little steep in the beginning but worth it. Only downside is it is kind of pricey, we got a discount for residents but it was still $35 for the five of us. Nature should be free if you ask me.
  • Tons of beautiful plants and flowers in a cool environment with a waterfall. Steep hike down and back up but golf cart assistance is available. Seemed a bit expensive for the experience but a nice thing to do on vacation. I wish I'd brought my book so we could have sat and enjoyed the environment a bit more.
  • This is one of my favorite places on the Big Island. These gardens are beautiful and stunning. It is a serene place to spend a few hours.
