Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, Papaikou

4.7
#4 of 92 in Parks in Island of Hawaii
Enjoy greenery, cascading waterfalls, and views of the ocean at Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden. The garden's fertile, volcanic soil benefits the growth of more than 2,000 tropical species, including an extraordinary collection of palm trees and bromeliads. The garden also functions as a preservation center for tropical plants that have been jeopardized by rain forest destruction. The trek is easy and leisurely, thanks to boardwalks with benches on most trails. Parking is free, and the garden provides umbrellas if it's raining. Because the garden is in a natural valley where temperatures might get quite hot, it's a good idea to bring water and insect repellent. This is an absolutely beautiful tropical garden. It is located in a valley and stretches to the coast. Entry is 18$ per person, but that's really ok for this garden  more »

This is really a beautiful garden area on Onomea Bay. Beside the gardens, there are great views of the bay and a nice waterfall. My only detraction is my realizing after I entered that the vast majori...  more »

Incredible! Massive! Beautiful! Huge plants! Beauty beyond words! Worth the quirky drive down a windy road! Steep walk down to the gardens. Some elderly may find the walk difficult. Hand rails are in ...  more »

Beautiful grounds with well maintained pathways. Lots of flowers with a whole area dedicated to orchids. Waterfalls, an oceanview, parrots, and lots of tropical vegetation to see! Nice staff, too. Has a golf cart that can take you down only the steep first part of the tour, but does not take you on the pathways throughout, so take bug spray and wear good walking shoes!

I loved this place so much, I could spend all day there. The flowers and plants are unique and gorgeous! It seems to be different every time i go, too. The end of the trail at the ocean is beautiful, too. Take your own bug spray and reapply it often.

Highly recommended. Beautiful flowers and views of all kind. There is a short steep hill to get down to the gardens but you can pay an extra $10 to have the golf cart take you down to a certain point and then pick you back up. It is worth it, if you have trouble with your knees. I had the prearranged flowers from the gift shop shipped to my mother for Mother's Day and they were absolutely gorgeous.

This place is a must see. It feels like you are in another world. The garden grounds are amazing and easy to walk. The beginning is a but of a decline so coming back up may take some a little more time but stop and enjoy the scenrary again. The trails lead you to breathe takings ocean side views.

It was pretty pricey at $36 for two adults and my wife and I saw 90 percent of the plants and flowers on our hikes which were free. With that being said, the lay out and planning were great and we did enjoy it. If you are a tourist type, this is a nice place. If u are an active hiker, you will see much of the plantlife in your hawaiian endeavors.
