Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, Papaikou

Categories: Gardens, Nature & Parks
Inspirock Rating:
4.7/5 based on 1,100+ reviews on the web
Enjoy greenery, cascading waterfalls, and views of the ocean at Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden. The garden's fertile, volcanic soil benefits the growth of more than 2,000 tropical species, including an extraordinary collection of palm trees and bromeliads. The garden also functions as a preservation center for tropical plants that have been jeopardized by rain forest destruction. The trek is easy and leisurely, thanks to boardwalks with benches on most trails. Parking is free, and the garden provides umbrellas if it's raining. Because the garden is in a natural valley where temperatures might get quite hot, it's a good idea to bring water and insect repellent. • You walk down the hill to the ocean through meandering paths. Onomea Bay is lovely. The trail is well maintained. A nice place to visit when dry or in the rain.
  • This is truly beautiful!!! We had rented a car to go see Akaka Falls and decided to stop here on our way back to Hilo. I am really glad we did. It was amazing. If you are into looking at beautiful pla...  read more »
  • This Botanical garden is beautiful. It is off the beaten path so make sure you have good directions. Depending on your agility, health, you can take a golf cart down the steep hill and back up to the ...  read more »
  • Such a variety of plants! Well taken care of and planed out. Very beautiful. Was not crowded when we came. Because of location near ocean and shade from tall trees it is cool even on a hot day. Good photo taking opportunities. It is like a tropical version of the Butchart Gardens. Easy to spend a few hours here.
  • Had lot of beauty. The flowers and plants were beautiful, the water falls were pretty and the ocean view was nice too. Everyone that worked there were so friendly and loved sharing their knowledge of the plants. Really a nice place.
  • I gave this 5 stars just because the founders took their own time and money to take what was just a place for people to throw their trash and convert it to this very nice tropical plant garden. Huge variety of plants with many beautiful flowers. The waterfall is splendid and the ocean lookout is the perfect picture of palm framed paradise. We had no issue with insects, so could be a time of year thing.
  • Absolutely breathtaking gardens. They said the walk around the gardens would take about an hour and a half - we barely covered half of it in that time, and I'm sorry to have missed it, but we were also stopping every few feet to take pictures. Would advise planning to spend 2-3 hours if you want to stop and smell the roses, as it were. The paths involve some hills, not necessarily great for someone who struggles with mobility, but we were told that a good cart could escort visitors down the initial steep hill and then bring them back up again. Didn't try it ourselves, but worth looking into. The visitors' center sells water, bug spray, rents umbrellas. Will absolutely visit again if I'm ever lucky enough to be back in Hilo.
  • It's interesting to see all the different types of plants, flowers, and trees. It's not just plants native to Hawai'i. It's from all over the world. Apparently, a couple found this place while visiting Big Island and it was a complete dump. They bought it, fixed it up, traveled the globe and brought all sorts of plants here back in the 70s. The park is huge. We spent two hours there and that was walking at a pretty swift pace because after a while, everything starts to look the same. So I can see how some people can easily spend the whole day here. If you plan to do that, make sure to bring food and drinks because they don't sell any inside the park. They do sell snacks and drinks at the visitor center, where you buy the tickets ($15). There's lots of mosquitoes so make sure you bring bug spray as well!
