Smith Family Farm, Palmyra

#2 of 6 in Things to do in Palmyra
Historic Site · Tourist Spot
The Smith Family Farm was the boyhood home of Joseph Smith, the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement.
The farm—located in the townships of Palmyra, Wayne County and Manchester, Ontario County, New York—includes the Sacred Grove, the Smiths' restored frame home, and a reconstructed log home. The farm site passed into ownership of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) in 1915, and in the 1990s, the church restored the frame home, reconstructed the log home, and built a welcome center. Church missionaries provide free tours.

  • Loved it! Smith home is adjacent to the sacred grove. I didn’t realize how close the sacred grove is from the smith home. It’s a very short walk. Beautiful! 💕
  • What a beautiful space, tranquil and spiritual and an easy walk. I recommend all to visit the historic homestead of the Smith family. The importance of the sites here and nearby are that they are origin of the Restitution of all things during the 19th century. Visit with an open heart and hear the words of a Prophet.
  • Awe inspiring. My husband I went into the grove itself late at night. There is definitely still a presence there that was undeniable. We felt watched the whole time, and I'm convinced had we gone there with evil intentions, we would not have made it out. But we meant no harm and were protected.
  • Wow! Where do I start? #1 ‐ it's the site of the Sacred Grove. #2 - it's the site of Moroni appearing to Joseph Smith and telling him about the plates. #3 - it's the original frame house built by Alvin. #4 ‐ it's where the Beans lived for so many years with so many famous visitors. My greatest Church history site of all time.
  • Helpful guides help you learn about the events that took place there. It's well kept and maintained. Nice restrooms, water fountains, benches, and air conditioning make the visit physically pleasant as well. If you're in the area, it's worth a visit. All attractions are free.
