Square Books is a general independent bookstore in three separate buildings (about 100 feet apart) on the historic town square of Oxford, Mississippi, home of the University of Mississippi and many great writers, including William Faulkner, Barry Hannah, Larry Brown, and, for a time, both Willie Morris and John Grisham. The main store, Square Books, is in a two-story building with a cafe and balcony on the second floor; Off Square Books is a few doors down from the main store and has lifestyle sections such as gardening and cookbooks; and Square Books Jr, the children's bookstore, is in a building on the east side of the square. Square Books is known for its strong selection of literary fiction, books on the American South and by Southern writers, a large inventory of reduced-price remainders, and its emphasis on books for children. The store hosts the popular Thacker Mountain radio show and over 150 author events a year.

Off Square Books is open 9 am-8 pm, Monday-Saturday, and noon-5 pm on Sunday.

  • I love this little bookstore situated in the picturesque Oxford square it is a must do!!! This perfectly quirky shop is filled with signed copies and also books about local areas.
  • Square Books is the first place you need to visit in Oxford! Beautiful, relaxing place! Fun place to go for book signings and just to browse!
  • Drop in and see what it's all about. This is what a southern bookstore is all about. We never go to Oxford without spending sometime taking in this iconic spot on the Square.
  • Was very excited to see Faulkner collectibles; asked three different clerks for assistance only to be blown off. I'll stick with Powell Books & their helpful staff.
  • Classic old-school bookstore. A true novelty these days.
  • This is the sort of place I could stay in all day. Especially due to visit on a rainy but wonderfully cool July day in Oxford. Lovely, great selection of books. Found several signed editions including recently released novel that I have been looking for. If visiting Ole Miss, make a point to stop in.
  • An insanely great independent bookstore
  • One of the most unique bookstores in America! This bookstore is located in the heart of Oxford's Town Square. The bookstore has a unique southern charm and appeal that outdoes any other place or chain store. The employees are friendly, outgoing, and super helpful. Don't forget, that Square Books has an amazing array of books to choose from!
