The Ouray Ice Park was officially organized in 1992. Many of the ice routes are natural and existed long before the park's inception. Now, most ice is created by using a robust, extensive irrigation system that ensures vast amounts of frozen waterfalls along the nearly mile long Uncompahgre River Gorge.

The Park was established and is maintained by a small, seasonal staff and an enthusiastic volunteer work force. It is a qualified 401(c)(3) non-profit corporation that includes seven board members and an Executive Director. The Ice Park is able to operate and expand climbable terrain through the generous support of annual membership donations, corporate sponsorships, and funds raised by the annual Ouray Ice Festival.

The typical ice climbing season run from mid-December through April 1st.

  • Great interesting short hike. Saw a bear up over on the other side of 550. Hiked up right from Twin Peaks Lodge.
  • AMAZING! Waterfall ice of all difficulties within steps of the warmth and comfort of your hotel? If you're feeling more adventurous, you can venture into the back country.
  • The mecca for ice climbing (at least from December to March). It's proximity to town and variety of routes makes it so easy to explore the sport, learn the fundamentals, practice or fine tune your ice climbing skills.
  • Amazing place...scenery and all
