Paine Art Center and Gardens, Oshkosh

4.7
#2 of 9 in Things to do in Oshkosh
The Paine is a historic estate that serves as a multi-faceted museum for learning and inspiration. The museum preserves the mansion, surrounding architectural structures, and many of the interiors as they were created by founders Nathan and Jessie Kimberly Paine. Selections from the museum’s art collection, much of which was acquired by Nathan and Jessie, are featured in the many rooms and settings of the estate. Outdoors, the Paine maintains and enhances numerous display gardens as “galleries” of horticulture with varied designs and thousands of plant specimens. In addition, the museum presents a wide variety of changing art exhibitions, from historical to contemporary, within the estate’s galleries and gardens. The Family Discovery Gallery, located on the house’s lower level, offers “hands on” activities about architecture, art, and gardens for people of all ages.

  • It was my first time visiting, and my first time going to an art gallery in general. I had a great time. Even if you're not particularly fond of art, the gardens outside are enchanting and provide a ton of great photo ops. I would come back here for sure.
  • This museum is a surprising gem! Went to see the Audubon exhibit, which was amazing and the docent was very knowledgeable about the exhibit and the Paine itself. Can't wait to go back for the Nutcracker exhibit. The gardens are a real treat. So many places to wander and just enjoy. Take the opportunity to sit in one of the many benches placed around the grounds and just take it all in.
  • Without the gardens up for viewing this time of the year, it´s a bit of a short ride. Nice digs, have to say that.
  • Was here for the Nutcracker in the Castle. So beautiful! Follows a story line as you walk through.
  • I wish this museum were closer. I would visit much more often. The traveling displays are amazing. Today it was the artwork and prints of John James Audubon. I love birds so this was definitely one of the best. There is so much more to the museum but today we spent time in the beautiful gardens.
