Paine Art Center and Gardens, Oshkosh

(4.8/5 based on 190+ reviews on the web)
The Paine is a historic estate that serves as a multi-faceted museum for learning and inspiration. The museum preserves the mansion, surrounding architectural structures, and many of the interiors as they were created by founders Nathan and Jessie Kimberly Paine. Selections from the museum’s art collection, much of which was acquired by Nathan and Jessie, are featured in the many rooms and settings of the estate. Outdoors, the Paine maintains and enhances numerous display gardens as “galleries” of horticulture with varied designs and thousands of plant specimens. In addition, the museum presents a wide variety of changing art exhibitions, from historical to contemporary, within the estate’s galleries and gardens. The Family Discovery Gallery, located on the house’s lower level, offers “hands on” activities about architecture, art, and gardens for people of all ages.

  • This place is really nice and they have some amazing stuff. Unfortunately it's very small and you'll get through it in no time flat. Not a great way to keep kids entertained for very long.  more »
  • Finally brought my family to the Paine's "Nutcracker in the Castle" event (this does sell out so you have to plan in advance) and we really enjoyed it. Our guide, dressed as Godfather Drosselmeyer, wa...  more »

  • This museum is a surprising gem! Went to see the Audubon exhibit, which was amazing and the docent was very knowledgeable about the exhibit and the Paine itself. Can't wait to go back for the Nutcracker exhibit. The gardens are a real treat. So many places to wander and just enjoy. Take the opportunity to sit in one of the many benches placed around the grounds and just take it all in.
  • Beautiful and historic. I look forward to the Nutcracker in the Castle every year. The Sugar Plum Fairy Cafe is so beautiful and magical for my kids.
  • I wish this museum were closer. I would visit much more often. The traveling displays are amazing. Today it was the artwork and prints of John James Audubon. I love birds so this was definitely one of the best. There is so much more to the museum but today we spent time in the beautiful gardens.
  • This is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Wisconsin throughout the year. The mansion is incredible and they offer many different kinds of exhibits and special events to the public.
  • Beautiful gardens, interesting architecture, several Poke stops.
