Salmon River Falls, Orwell

4.9
The Salmon River Falls is a 110ft waterfall on the Salmon River in Oswego County, New York in the United States. It is situated within the 112acre Salmon River Falls Unique Area, which is managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The falls and surrounding land are open to the public and are a popular sightseeing destination within the region.HistoryPrior to European settlement, the Salmon River Falls area was utilized by the Onondaga, Oneida, and Cayuga tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy as seasonal fishing grounds, where they would harvest Atlantic salmon that were blocked from further upstream migration on the Salmon River by the falls. It was not until the early 1800s that roads began to expand into the heavily forested region surrounding the falls, allowing for the first sightseers to visit the falls. Recreational and commercial salmon fishing was also noted at the falls prior to the extirpation of Atlantic salmon from the river in 1872. A tourist lodge and dancing establishment known as The Cataract House was operated near the falls between 1860 and 1888, and a food and novelty stand was operated at the falls in 1896. At this time, the falls were alternately referred to as High Falls in some sources.

  • A must see and do while visiting Oswego County! Year-round beauty! Hike in the summer, spring and fall and be sure to have snowshoes for winter exploring.
  • One of the most beautiful places in Upstate New York and a great place to Adventure to with the family I highly recommend taking a days trip out and hanging out there watching the falls and hiking the trails you can even hang out at the top of the falls on the Flat Rocks and dip your feet in the water but don't go past the the danger signs in the painted line on the ground for your own safety and the please any Trash you bring in take out with you and keep the land beautiful
  • Such an incredible place to go. Being able to walk on a trail that leads to right next to the falls was pretty amazing. Also you get to go on top of it!
  • I have gone here since I was a kid. I've always loved the hikes. I mean I've been going here since when there used to be a rope you climbed down to get the the bottom (my dad would have me on his shoulders)! Crazy right. But even with the changed and them cracking down on safety it is still gorgeous and a class8c. It sucks that teens go there and use it to party though. The walk down to the bottom is steep and and times slippery but manageable for someone whose hiked befofe. I went down it 8 months pregnant and again with kids. The top is very easy to get to. The mosquitos out that way are horrible so bring bug spray if you hate getting bit.
  • A real gem in the area. Just awesome
