Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park is a state park, located in Humboldt County, California, near the town of Orick and 50 miles (80 km) north of Eureka. The 14,000 acre (57 km²) park is a coastal sanctuary for old-growth Coast Redwood trees. The park is jointly managed by the California Department of Parks and Recreation and the National Park Service as a part of the Redwood National and State Parks. These parks (which includes Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, and Redwood National Park) have been collectively designated as a World Heritage Site and form part of the California Coast Ranges International Biosphere Reserve. The meadow along the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway, with its population of Roosevelt elk, is considered a centerpiece of the park, located near the information center and campground. These open areas of grassland within the redwood forest are locally known as prairies; and the park takes its name from Prairie Creek flowing near the western edge of the meadow and along the west side of the parkway. Other popular sites in the park are Fern Canyon and Gold Bluffs Beach. The park is also home to the tailed frog and several species of salmon.

  • Travelers going north from Eureka or south from Crescent City might pass by the Prairie Creek exit. You would be missing out. This is a great place for a week of camping and hiking or for a short hour...  more »
  • Nice trails but we struggled with trail maps and markers, despite being generally good navigators. We had no service so couldn't use AllTrails either... be prepared. We did see the elk twice, and that...  more »

  • The majority (93%) of the road to the park entrance and to the parking for fern canyon is dirt/mud with huge pothole's and narrow passages (single car). Not many turnouts or turn around points. You even drive through two small creeks. So we highly recommend a 4x4; in fact it was fun hitting the puddles! That being said, this place is soooooo awesome. Campground is nice. Fern Canyon is incredibly beautiful, the trails are fun, beach access, and there is a tone of nature. I'd recommend skipping the bathrooms; I'd rather pack it out.
  • The coolest part about this place is the sheer amount of elk present for viewing. We had the amazing opportunity of seeing multiple elk up close and personal. Also, they have an amazing amount of big trees including “big tree” itself. It’s a great park and a must stop!
  • A truly awesome experience! The campground wasn't that full and the staff was super knowledgeable and friendly. You have got to see the Redwoods at this park if you have never seen them before. So many beautiful trails to hike on. Fern Canyon is absolutely magnificent. I'll be going back soon.
  • Fabulous, magical place full of sleeping giants! It is a spread out area full of beautiful gigantic trees. Great hiking everywhere or just drive through slowly (no, seriously, take a hike!) The trees are indescribably huge. There are too many trails to choose from; some short and some long, each with its own view of paradise!
  • Fern Canyon: If you have the time, use the miners ridge/Clintonia/James Irvine trail to go from park headquarters to fern canyon rather than drive to fern canyon. For an easy (level) 5 mile loop with great redwoods: Go north on Foothill trail (from cathedral trail or big tree parking lot), when that trail ends go west to prairie creek trail and head south (return trip will be flat as it follows the creek) don't forget to checkout the corkscrew tree on the way back. For something more moderate (vs. Easy) go up the rhododendron trail.
