State Park Nature / Park
Wildcat Mountain State Park is a state park of Wisconsin, United States, on the Kickapoo River in the Driftless Area. Sandstone bluffs topped with limestone, two of which are Wildcat Mountain and Mount Pisgah, provide views over the narrow valley of the river and its tributaries. The Kickapoo Valley Reserve is immediately adjacent and forms a continuous protected area. Wildcat Mountain State Park is open for year-round recreation including hiking, canoeing, fishing, and cross-country skiing. The 3643acre park is located in Vernon County near the town of Ontario, Wisconsin.HistoryWildcat Mountain State Park is in the Kickapoo Valley. Archaeologists have found evidence of human occupation in the area dating back to 2000 BCE. Indian rock shelters and mounds have been found in and around the park. Most archaeologists believe that the shelters and mounds are remnants of temporary hunting camps. No evidence of agricultural practices have been found in the vicinity. Historians believe that the Natives used the Kickapoo Valley as a hunting area and held more permanent settlements in the Tomah area near the confluence of the Kickapoo and Wisconsin Rivers.

  • This was my intial visit. The park is beautiful. The trails are a bit challenging but I was happy with my visit and I would certainly return.  more »

  • Great place to observe fall colors. Went during the week and had the place to ourselves. Best hiking was across the road in the state natural area. One of the hilliest areas in Wisconsin to go hiking.  more »

  • An underrated Wisconsin State Park gem overlooking the Kickapoo River. There's an overlook at the top of the park that offers one of the prettiest views in Wisconsin. It's also a great place to watch a sunset. And if you're a bird watcher, bring your binoculars -- you'll see many birds flying at eye-level and even BELOW you from the overlook. We hiked the 2.5-mile Old Settler's Trail. There are some very interesting sandstone formations along the path and an overlook that provides views of the Village of Ontario below (might not be visible when the trees are fully leaved). We visited in late Spring 2017 and a tornado ravaged one wooded section. It'll be cleaned up once the college kids have a chance to work at the park in the Summer, but I imagine the visible damage will remain for some time. Healthy, 10-inch diameter white pines were snapped in half like they were toothpicks! Look for this when you hike the trail and imagine the incredible power of wind to do something like this.
  • A relatively small park. The old settlers trail was a nice short hike. I would have giving a higher rating but recent changes to the funding of Wisconsin state parks has lead to increasing costs for visitors and noticeably less maintenance/management of state land.
  • Camp grounds where clean and very nicely laied out. Showers where on the small side for a 6 foot man. They did have plenty of hot water and space to counter the low hight of the head. Price was on the lower end for the amenities at the ready.
  • A great park that highlights the scenic driftless area of Wisconsin. Don't miss the lookout in the upper park.
  • For being in Wisconsin definitely feels like your on a mountain. Nice quiet out of the way park. It's a nice change of pace from your Devils Lake or Governor Dodge. Friendly staff and decent campsites. Some good views. Went in the late fall, probably would of been 5 stars in the summer.
