#7 of 18 in Nature in Olympic National Park
Lake Cushman is a 4010acre lake and reservoir on the north fork of the Skokomish River in Mason County, Washington. The lake originally was a long narrow broadening of the Skokomish River formed in a glacial trough and dammed by a terminal moraine from the last ice age, during the Vashon stade. The lake was expanded after construction of the Cushman Dam No. 1. The lake is maintained by this dam and provides electrical power to the Tacoma Power system. As a popular retreat for hiking, fishing, boating and kayaking, Lake Cushman's shoreline is dotted with resorts and rental cabins. The lake is notable for its beautiful crystal clear blue water and the huge round rocks surrounding it, as well as thick stands of hemlock, fir and cedar trees.Lake Cushman was named in honor of Orrington Cushman, who served as interpreter for Governor Isaac Stevens during the Treaty of Point Elliott negotiations with Puget Sound Indians in 1854.There is also a town near Lake Cushman known as Lake Cushman, Washington, or simply Cushman, Washington. Still unincorporated, it is the fastest-growing community in Mason County.

  • Beautiful glacier lake in Mt. Olympic Park. Need special state pass to get parking. Lots of wildlife in this evergreen forest. Many trout species live here, cougars live there too. Be cautious if you hike this region.
  • Clear water and super cold! Great for swimming on those HOT days! Definitely recommend going up when it's at least in high 80s or 90s at home. Otherwise that water is just too cold! Drive slow on the dirt road and watch out for all the cars parked haphazardly on the side!
  • Absolutely gorgeous. It's a good sized lake and the water is clean and clear. I go there several times a week and all different seasons.
  • Do you like having fun, seeing amazing views, and swimming in beautiful water?? Then this is the place to go. If you are a 20+ year old and in this area in the summer you will not be disappointed. Just bring a hammock and a cooler and try to park close to the big rock.
  • Clear, beautiful water at the base of the stunning, jagged Mt. Ellinor. This lake is a jewel in a treasure chest of an area. I kayaked here last weekend and cannot wait to get back.
