Janney Furnace Park, Ohatchee

4.5
#123 of 183 in Parks in Alabama
Janney Furnace Park is a park surrounding a fifty-foot tall stone furnace in Ohatchee, Alabama. The furnace was built in 1863 by Alfred Janney to produce pig iron due to the prevalence of iron ore in what is now the park. A July 1864 Union raid destroyed all but the stone chimney, which still remains. The furnace is now surrounded by the Calhoun County Confederate Memorial, built by Sons of Confederate Veterans in June 2003; and the 2009 Confederate and Native American Museum, which includes Civil War and Native American artifacts dating back to the Iron Age. The Confederate Memorial is the world's largest black granite confederate memorial. The furnace was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

  • What great view of history. To look at the stones placed tightly together and still standing today. The stones were cut to fit with a hammer and chisel and fit exactly in place. This is amazing  more »

  • Excellent place to take the kids (and even adults that were "educated" up north). The memorial wall is beautifully done, and is a fitting testament to the brave souls inscribed thereon. The museum is packed with artifacts, and they even have Civil War re-enactments that are outstanding! Highly recommend paying a visit!
  • We went to their memorial day celebration. The museum was amazing. Clean bathrooms. Cold air conditioning.my 3yr old enjoyed looking at all the different knives and swords. We got to see some of the battle reenactment. It was a very enjoyable experience.
  • Very pretty and serene Park!! The furnace is also well preserved!! Highly recommend
  • Great location for events. Beautiful clean friendly
  • This is a great little park. We were there on New Years Day so it was closed but we still enjoyed the walking trail and the pups swam in the beautiful pond. Very peaceful place to hang out on a warm winter afternoon. We will definitely go back again when it is open.
