The Allen Memorial Art Museum is located in Oberlin, Ohio and is run by Oberlin College. Founded in 1917, its collection is one of the finest of any college or university museum in the United States, consistently ranking among those of Harvard and Yale. The collection contains over 14,000 works of art.The AMAM is primarily a teaching museum, and it is a vital cultural resource for the students, faculty, and staff of Oberlin College as well as the surrounding community. Notable strengths include seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish art, nineteenth and early twentieth-century European and contemporary American art, and Asian, European, and American works on paper. The collection is housed in an impressive Italian Renaissance-style building designed by Cass Gilbert and named after its founder, Dr. Dudley Peter Allen, a distinguished graduate and trustee of Oberlin College. The AMAM is also known for its art rental program which enables Oberlin College students to rent works of art by notable artists such as Renoir, Picasso, and DalĂ for five dollars a semester. In 1977, Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown designed an addition that represents one of the earliest and finest examples of postmodern architecture in the United States. In 2011, the historic museum underwent a two-year retrofit; after which it was awarded with USGBC LEED Gold certification.

  • Amazing Cass Gilbert Art Museum. The inside is a study in arches. The ceiling is magnificent. The art collection is wonderful as well, but the building is not to be missed.  more »
  • My daughter and I decided to visit Oberlin one day while she was on thanksgiving break and before she returned to college for EXAMS. This is a gem, growing up around here, I never knew it was here. It...  more »

  • Lovely museum! A nice way to spend an hour or two on a rainy day, or even a sunny day. The galleries have been recently updated and there's more to see then it appears at first. A definite must-see if you happen to be in Oberlin.
  • Love the atmosphere. Beautiful and best of all free. The best hidden jewel of Oberlin.
  • I liked to look at the modern art and laugh about how much I dislike modern art. The staff was annoying and followed us around and basically told us not to look at the paintings so hard. I leaned on the wall for two seconds, pointed a little too close to the picture, had my phone screen on for a second too long before i started walking, on top of just senselessly following. It was too quiet and it was horribly uncomfortable. I would probably never want to go again.
  • It was an interesting look at art. It has been quite a while since I stepped inside of the museum. I viewed many great pieces of work, learned about Asian culture in particular and will return with my son soon.
  • An outstanding art museum by any measure - especially for a college museum. I don't think enough locals in Oberlin and especially in Cleveland come out to visit this wonderful place. It's free and open to the public and boy is it worth it. Many of the big names can be found inside, as well as a well-curated collection of other artists. If you are looking for a day trip - come to Oberlin and visit the AMAM!
