Opus One Winery, Oakville
(3/5 based on 360+ reviews on the web)
Opus One Winery is a winery in Oakville, California, USA. The wine was called napamedoc until 1982 when it was named Opus One. The winery was founded as a joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi to create a single Bordeaux style blend based upon Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. It is located across State Route 29 from the Robert Mondavi Winery. The creation of this winery venture in 1980 was big news in the wine industry; de Rothschild's involvement added an air of respectability to the burgeoning Napa wine region. The first vintage, 1979 was released in 1984 at the same time as the 1980 vintage. For a while it was the most expensive Californian wine costing 50 USD. In 1989 a new winery was built just down the road, the first vintage from the new winery was from 1991 and was released in 1994.HistoryThe genesis of Opus One wine can be traced to 1970 at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel on the Big Island of Hawaii where Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild met for the very first time and began their collaboration to merge old world and new world wine styles into one grand opus. The joint venture between Mondavi and Baron Rothschild was announced in 1980, though plans for the winery had been developing between the two men since the early 1970s. In 1980, Mondavi sold 35 acres from his To Kalon Vineyard in the Oakville AVA to the joint venture that would serve as the backbone for the blend. The first vintage from this block was released in 1985 and soon the estate built the large limestone winery in Oakville that has become an icon of the Napa Valley.

  • We have relied on other vineyards for a visit at best price but took the opportunity to tasted the largest Californian wine. We are 3 friends who have share 3 different years offered at the tasting and were able to make a vertical tasting. This wine is really worth its price and great wines are worth the work required for their production. $45 60 us for 4 ounces of wine, it's the equivalent of the price of the bottle (no additional profit on the back of customers). The attendant at the counter even used all his notions of french to communicate with us :) Great time for lovers of great wines. And not to mention the roof terrace to admire the superb landscape all sipping.

  • Order the wine, don't waste your time on the winery. The service is terrible.
  • Just got back from trip to Napa. First taste and tour was Opus One, don't miss this one!! At first quite intimidating but after meeting our tour guide (Morgan) and doing the tour I was very impressed and a lot more knowledgeable when finished. Don't miss this one, best wine we had and we went to several of the higher end wineries. I will go back!!!
  • Opus One has always been a great cabernet maker and I have enjoyed several of their bottles over the years
  • Very high end winery. Reservations are recommended. The building it self is spectacular. One of the best wines in the region
  • Very elegant but not too pretentious as expected, which was good. Great wine.
