Tilden Nature Area, Oakland

4.9
#5 of 14 in Parks in Oakland
Tilden Nature Area is a 740-acre preserve located just North of Tilden Regional Park. With over 10 miles of hiking trails, the preserve contains a blend of native and introduced plant communities, including oak/bay woodlands, grasslands, eucalyptus forests, and streams. Hikes range from the leisurely, self-guided Jewel Lake Nature Trail to a vigorous climb up Wildcat Peak (elevation 1,211') for panoramic, San Francisco Bay views. A 750-foot boardwalk through the woods leads to Jewel Lake, a historic reservoir and waterworks, and a peaceful place to watch wildlife.

At Tilden Nature Area one can also find the renowned Environmental Education Center (EEC), headquarters for the area's interpretive programs, and the historic Little Farm.

  • A great place for kids! Bring celery to feed the animals. It's fun to walk around the loop and see, pet and feed all the animals (cows, bunnies, sheep, chicks etc). We took a picnic and just ate on the lawn. There's also a playground right by the parking lot that the kids loved. The visitor center has fun exhibits for kids as well. A wonderful place to spend a day.
  • What a great spot. We visited the Little Farm. Our daughter loved feeding the cows, sheep and goats. The Farm Manager, Stanley is truly a pleasure to talk to. I would highly recommend a visit to the Tilden Little Farm for anyone with children or for anyone that is a child at heart.
  • Great our area with lots of grass and picnic tables throughout the park. Little Farm is great to hang and feed the animals... bring some lettuce!
  • Amazing nature area. For toddlers, there is the little farm as well as the steam train that rides through the redwoods. About half a mile from the little farm, there's a lake. If you bring rain boots, it's great for exploring with toddlers and looking for tadpoles.
  • Fun for the whole family. Merry Go Round, Steam Train and Little Farm. We visit at least once each year. My ids still live visiting at 12 and 14 years old.
