Bayernhof Museum, O'Hara Township

4.9
Bayernhof Music Museum features a major collection of automated musical instruments from the 19th and 20th centuries. Located six miles northeast of downtown Pittsburgh in the suburb of O'Hara Township, Pennsylvania, it is housed in German-style mansion sited on an 18-acre, dramatic overlook some 540 feet above the Allegheny River Valley.

Bayernhof is the name of the mansion itself, a $4.2 million project completed in 1982 as a private residence by Charles Brown III, founder and CEO of Gas-Lite Manufacturing Company in Pittsburgh. The 19,000-square-foot house includes a rooftop observatory, an indoor cave, a swimming pool with a 10-foot waterfall, 10 fireplaces, eight full baths, three powder rooms, three full-size kitchens as well as a completely restored copper still.

The museum was a directive of Mr. Brown's will and it opened to the public in 2004.

  • I and four friends recently visited this museum, and everyone loved it. The tour was a bit over 2 hours and the very congenial host told many interesting stories about the house and it's builder. He also got everyone involved by asking them questions and what they thought about certain aspects of the museum. And it is definitely a bargain at only $10. We plan to visit again.
  • I've been here twice and would gladly return any day. There's nothing else like this experience, from the musical instruments, the whimsy of the mansion and the knowledgeable guide. This is an essential stop if you're visiting the city, or if you're looking to try something outside the typical run-of-the-mill museum experience.
  • Amazing home, stories, musical instruments and guide. Don't miss it!
  • Very interesting collection in an amazing house....the tour guide was a bit eccentric.
  • Wonderful tour with great guides. Have taken the tour twice myself. Every person I've taken has loved it. I would love to say more but saying too much spoils the tour.
