Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park, known as Scout's Rest Ranch, is a living history state park located west of North Platte, Nebraska. The ranch was established in 1878 with an initial purchase of 160 acres south of the Union Pacific tracks by William (Buffalo Bill) Cody. The 4,000 acre ranch was sold in 1911 and has been under the management of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission since 1964. The 25 acre historic state park, deemed a National Historic Landmark in 1978, is open weekdays from April to October. The house and outbuildings can be toured, including a museum documenting Cody’s life from a Pony Express rider to his Wild West shows.
In 1877 Cody contacted Major Frank North, the leader of the Pawnee Scouts, who was living in Sidney, Nebraska. Cody founded the Cody-North Partnership with the North brothers to form a cattle business. North found land along the Dismal River, 65 miles north of North Platte, on which cattle could graze and a ranch could be built. Cody continued touring his “Buffalo Bill’s Wild West” show while North purchased cattle at the north end of the Texas cattle trail, near Ogallala, Nebraska. North hired cowboys to help operate the ranch while Cody was on tour.

  • Visited parts of this. Hardly anyone there due to cold and left over snow. Visited years ago in summer.  more »
  • Enjoyed the tour of Buffalo Bill's homestead in North Platte, which has been made into a Museum. Also has a nice gift shop.  more »
  • The grounds are beautiful and worth a look. Unfortunately the house was to open but you could get a good idea and it was lovely to see the exterior. Well worth the stop so did not regret it  more »

  • I visited Scout’s Rest Ranch in July 2018 and it was a wonderful experience. The docents were welcoming and the Second Empire mansion that Bill Cody built is beautifully maintained and full of memorabilia. The ranch itself is a sylvan paradise and the barn is an experience in itself with photos and posters from Buffalo Bill’s Wild West. The baby buffalo with his parents added charm. I am so glad the State of Nebraska bought this property and keeps it looking spiffy and authentic. Mr. Cody planted cottonwood trees and they are still thriving. One extra pleasure was seeing Frank North & Bill Cody’s original log cabin that used to be located on their ranch near the Dismal River. It’s rustic and adds to the property’s allure.
  • Parking okay. The location itself is a one time deal. Once you've seen it. That's it. No since seeing it again unless decorated for Christmas.
  • Beautiful place! Wonderful people with fantastic historical stories!
  • Very interesting especially after a research paper Annie Oakley. A great stop along a log drive through the state of Nebraska.
  • The house was unexpected with elegant furnishings. The barn with wagons and memorabilia of the wild west show is a short walk from house. There is also a State Park entrance fee since the house is now part of the park system.
