MASS MoCA, North Adams

(4.5/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
In a converted factory complex, MASS MoCA features 19 galleries of contemporary visual arts and performing arts. Spread over 9,300 sq m (100,000 sq ft) of space, the center also hosts festivals and performances of artists from around the world. At the center of the campus, you'll discover more than 100 monumental wall drawings and paintings that occupy nearly a quarter of the wall space. Contemplate the urban spaces depicted through feelings of desire, loss, and culture, produced by 10 different artists. Look up before you enter the museum, as there are six suspended inverted trees growing from above. • Beautiful repurposed turn of the century industrial campus turned into a contemporary art gallery. What's not to like. Nice varied collection including a few outdoor pieces. North Adams adapting around the museum with nice restaurants, other galleries and attractions. Still lots of original architecture and local charm to add to the experience.
  • I went here for a concert but came early enough to roam the complex. This place is beyond impressive. Littered with art installations on large scales, a brewery, a coffee house, and several galleries with art on display, I feel I could roam this place for an entire day and still miss something. The show was in their back grass lot where an amphitheater was setup. It was a great outdoor concert venue.
  • A must see when in the Berkshires area. Even the surrounding town is cute.. Make sure you have change for the parking meters. Parking for the museum is limited. Also has a nice dining area with great food options.
  • Exceptional if you like abstract art ( which I do). Creative use of old factory/mill & ambitious plans to expand, including "extreme" model railroad at separate location. I think plan is to have up to a 100 highly detailed model trains running.
  • The Mass MoCA is truly a great destination in Western Massachusetts. All of the visits I've had have been eye opening through the vivd landscape of media art. Way more hits than misses. Great organization to support, great installations to see!
