#1 of 8 in Things to do in North Adams
In a converted factory complex, MASS MoCA features 19 galleries of contemporary visual arts and performing arts. Spread over 9,300 sq m (100,000 sq ft) of space, the center also hosts festivals and performances of artists from around the world. At the center of the campus, you'll discover more than 100 monumental wall drawings and paintings that occupy nearly a quarter of the wall space. Contemplate the urban spaces depicted through feelings of desire, loss, and culture, produced by 10 different artists. • I have been coming back to North Adams since I was a child in the 80s and have witnessed the renewal of this town firsthand. This museum has continuously provided a center of gravity for art, culture, and transformation for North Adams. I will always find time to check out this place when I am in town. They do a good job of making this interesting for everyone by balancing their standing exhibitions with new installments and galleries. They also have a kids area and do scavenger hunts. I haven’t seen a concert here yet, but can imagine it would be great based on the uniqueness of the venue.
  • Review based on free family day in January 2018. A large area to explore with many visual and audio delights. Apparently things change here regularly to keep it fresh. There are some BIG pieces of art here which is impressive. It was quite crowded and lively with free tours. It would take at least 3 hours to really see everything. There is a food and gift area which I found to be pricey. Parking was tough on a free day and we had a five minute walk from a lot two blocks over.
  • A tremendous museum. It's large enough that even with long running exhibits (10 or 25 years), there's a new installation regularly. They also have an active events calendar with comedians, bands, performers, and of course several large concert events (Solid Sound, Freshgrass). If you live in the area, consider a membership. Being able to visit for 30-45 minutes on a rainy Wednesday changes your appreciation of the place.
  • The best art museum in Western mass. You never know what to expect at massmoca and that's part of the appeal. Prepare yourself for awe-inspiring and expansive art installations in a similarly impressive renovated mill building. The cafe has great sandwiches and I highly recommend seeing a performance-- either inside at the hunter center or outside for a festival-type vibe.
  • Not enough time in one day to appreciate everything. Staff was helpful and friendly. Cafe had good selection of good food. The ice cream sandwiches are out of this world.
