Tioga Downs is a county-fair-themed standardbred racetrack (5/8 mile) and racino located on a 138acre site in Nichols, New York.HistoryTioga Downs originally was a quarterhorse track known as "Tioga Park" in 1976, closing down after its third season. James Nuckel, then owner, stated that, "the track had been losing thousands of dollars a day and was still in the red after three years of operation" (New York Times, 1978). Thereafter, a few private races and the occasional flea market were held at the location.RevivalIn 2000, Jeffrey Gural, a real-estate executive, horse owner, and racing enthusiast, began lobbying for state approval of Video Lottery Terminals (VLTs) at racetracks. In 2005, they were approved. Shortly after Gural, with partnership from Nevada Gold and Casinos, bought the old Tioga Park for $32 million (New York Times, 2006; Press and Sun Bulletin, 2006). A ground-breaking ceremony was held July 22, 2005.On June 9, 2006, Tioga Downs opened, offering harness racing, simulcast betting, and over 800 VLTs. Tioga Downs has two bars, a Subway(TM) restaurant, banquet room, coffee/bakery shop, and buffet. It also has a stage area, which hosts concerts. Artists that appeared at Tioga Downs have included Gretchen Wilson, Vanilla Ice, Tony Orlando, and Sister Sledge. During the warmer months, a trackside tent is available for wedding receptions, business meetings, parties, and awards' ceremonies. Tioga Downs Casino Reviews
Very nice facility. We have visited here a few times. Seems like they have very limited tables for craps players. This visit there was 1 craps table open. We stayed in the hotel and checked several ti... more »
We made a circuitous trip to Waterloo, Elmira, and back home to the Albany area. We have seen all 3 "new" casinos as approved by Lord Cuomo. Good luck to all of them. Del Lago is by far the best. Larg... more »
Love this place! The games are always fun and enjoyable! Drinks are fairly priced and taste decent. The restaurant and buffet are both great in there own right! Always fun to be had here! more »
We were here a few years ago and it is so much nicer since the new addition and remodel. It is smoke fee, very clean, comfortable and bright. The noise level is even comfortable since the majority of slots seem newer and have volume settings. A fun place!
The casino dealt the cards honestly in the hand shuffled blackjack game. This was my first time playing blackjack at this casino. Hopefully my experience will not change in the future because there are many shady and corrupt operators with gaming licenses on the East Coast that operate gambling businesses like they are above the law. I personally have about 30 years experience in gaming and do not judge a facility by my wins and losses. Hopefully a follow up review by me sometime in the future will echo this same initial sentiment regarding Tioga Downs.
The hotel was very clean, good smell. Pillows and towels are soft and fluffy, beds are so comfortable! There are elevators, ice and vending machines. The vending machines take cards :) There's also cable tv, and adjustable heating /cooling to your liking. The hotel, parking garage and casino are all connected. Definitely recommended!
This casino has everything the big casino's have but in a smaller package! The restaurants have a variety of food for all tastes and you won't be disappointed! Their new hotel was comfy where you can relax by the pool or in the hot tub! Worth spending a nite or two so you can enjoy a mini vacation!
Visited the casino and had lunch at the buffet today. The casino is bigger, clean and comfortable. The buffet on the other hand was disappointing and not very good. The only smile received came from the hostess seating us. The plates by the salads were hot, the ham and turkey dry, the soup very chunky and bland. My soda sat empty for 5 minutes until I was able to receive a refill The fried chicken was good and the cheesecake. No one asked how was everything, so I guess the casino does not care.
