#3 of 11 in Shopping in Marin County
At the age of 17, our grandfather, Fredolino Lafranchi immigrated to America from Maggia, Switzerland, with the dream to one day own and operate his own dairy. In 1919, that dream became reality when Fred and his wife Zelma Dolcini Lafranchi established the Lafranchi Dairy in the western Marin town of Nicasio, California.

Fred and Zelma raised their five children on this beautiful ranch. Their eldest son, Will, our father, continued in the family business, raising us, his 6 children here and living his entire 78 years on this very special land.

During his life, Will was able to visit his ancestral homeland a number of times, and developed a special bond with his numerous Swiss relatives. Will and his extended family enjoyed many wonderful meals together, which included a distinctive selection of cheeses handmade by local artisans.

The appreciation of these fabulous cheeses left him and us with a longing to enjoy these treats back home. Our family dairy afforded the perfect resource to pay homage to this part of our heritage. Establishing the Nicasio Valley Cheese Company in 2010 has given us the opportunity to bring to reality something our father had only dreamt of.

Swiss Master Cheesemaker, Maurizio Lorenzetti has mentored our family in the art of making the cheeses of Valle Maggia to ensure they are as magical here as they are in Switzerland.

Our entire Lafranchi family is extremely proud to share our Nicasio Valley Cheese with you! We hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

  • Fabulous selection of handcrafted cheeses with generous help-yourself sampling. Warm, helpful staff. Purchase some bread, bring some local wine along with you, and sit at outside table and enjoy.  more »
  • You can see the cheese making through the window of the shop. All cheeses can be tasted before any purchase and are all produced locally. The staff is very friendly. The best of course is the taste...  more »
  • What a delight! All of their cheeses are out for tasting and although no one is likely to love every one, it's great to find a few that you just have to have. Bring a cooler and buy a selection...  more »

  • What a joy to find while a driving tour of the area. To begin with, the landscape in the area and Nicassio Valley is simply stunning. The shop had a full spread of cheeses for sampling. We ended up purchasing quite a few cheeses and a few jams too. Worth the drive.
  • Really wonderful selection of artisan cheeses...also nice collection of jams and crackers. Bring a bottle of wine and enjoy at the picnic tables...a lovely way to spend an afternoon.
  • If you couldn't get to Cowgirl, then you can always visit this small 'creamery' that is similar in taste and quality. I loved that this site was literally right off the highway.
  • Wonderful little cheese chop up north from the city, about a 45 minute drive. Not the largest shop, but definitely has some of the best cheese in the Bay Area! Well worth stopping if you are heading up the coast to Tomales Bay or Bodega Bay. Don't forget to pick up a cheese trail map while you're there to discover more wonderful cheese shops!
  • Driving by, enjoying the beautiful scenery, until someone from the back seat calls out "free cheeeeese tastings!". A quick u-turn and I couldn't have been happier! All kinds of delicious tastings! Left with $50 dollars worth of awesome. The guys behind the counter were also super kind! Get that garlic-balsamic jam, you will not be disappointed.
