Devils Punchbowl State Natural Area, Newport

(4.3/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web)
Spend a day on the coast and admire the unusual play of waves at Devils Punchbowl State Natural Area. The highlight of the park is a natural rock bowl, the result of the collapse of two coastal caves. The bowl is partially open to the ocean, allowing waves to enter. During high surf, you can watch the waves violently swirl and foam inside the bowl. The coastline is lined with different rock formations and tide pools. In addition to wave-watching, the park offers opportunities for surfing, hiking, and picnicking. Whales migrate through this area and, in season, you can easily spot them from the beach. • I love this spot for a short stop (off the Otter Crest Loop a short detour off of US 101). Not sure it's worth a sidetrip for everyone. If you like seeing waves whomp through an arch into a big rock p...  more »
  • We saw this at Low tide o the first day. Walked around and took a few pictures. On the second day the tide was really pushing in. Wow. Very scenic picturesque area.
  • You can't walk down and get close. So it's just a lookout pretty much. I would recommend driving 25min north to depoe bay "home of the Grey whale" really neat waves and rocks where the water sprays up...  more »
