Devils Punchbowl State Natural Area, Newport
(4.3/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web)
Spend a day on the coast and admire the unusual play of waves at Devils Punchbowl State Natural Area. The highlight of the park is a natural rock bowl, the result of the collapse of two coastal caves. The bowl is partially open to the ocean, allowing waves to enter. During high surf, you can watch the waves violently swirl and foam inside the bowl. The coastline is lined with different rock formations and tide pools. In addition to wave-watching, the park offers opportunities for surfing, hiking, and picnicking. Whales migrate through this area and, in season, you can easily spot them from the beach. • We were staying in Newport and decided to drive to Heceta Head. So glad we did! The views along the highway are amazing! Devils Punchbowl is gorgeous, with lots of interesting geographical features.
  • This also a creation of Mother Nature which is amazing, but when the tide is calm and out, its not all that Devilish... but you can see how dangerous it could be in nasty weather - and why its called ...  more »
  • We went specifically so my husband could photograph the Devils Punchbowl. We couldn't believe the impressive waves of the whole area, and enjoyed spending time there and taking pictures.
