Almost exclusively residential, this neighborhood contains lavish mansions built by affluent summer vacationers, including the Astor and Vanderbilt families. These homes represent examples of various architectural styles and showcase designs of some of the most innovative architects working at the turn of the 20th century, like Richard Upjohn and Richard Morris Hunt. Several mansions appear on the National Register of Historic Places and offer guided tours to educate younger generations about the golden age of American architecture.   • The shops along Bellview Ave are lovely, unique, and staffed by welcoming shop keepers.If you exhaust them and still have energy, move to the wharfs and to Thames St. 
  • What a terrific avenue to stroll and take in all the structures and envision how this area developed in the late 1800s. The roadway is very busy though. 
  • Even if you choose not to go into any mansions, it's nice to walk Bellevue Avenue. There are still private residences, but it's especially fun to check out the outside of the public mansions, up close...  more »
