Hatfield Marine Science Center, Newport

Science Museum · Educational Site
Part museum, part active science lab, Hatfield Marine Science Center operates thanks to Oregon's flagship university and sits right next to the Yaquina Bay. The facility's public education wing houses a visitor center, featuring exhibits that showcase everything from new developments in modern marine research to the local fishing industry. You won't want to miss the major daily event--the feeding of the center's giant octopus, which occupies a large tank at the entrance into the exhibit area. The center strives to teach the public about ocean resource management, microscopic sea life, tide-pool habitats, and the effect of tsunamis on fragile coastal environments. Although admission is free, you can make a donation at your own discretion. Make Hatfield Marine Science Center part of your personalized Newport itinerary using our Newport vacation planning tool.

  • We try and stop by every year or so to watch their newest programs. They are the VERY best! They change the marine species in the tanks all the time as well, but their "special programs" arfe just SO....  more »
  • Much better than the neighbors, and always a treat. Interactive with tide pool animals, and learning stations throughout. Will definitely return.  more »
  • I was surprised at how many things to look at for a free science center. I really did not expect much and was pleasantly surprised  more »
  • We had SO much fun! I planned a low-cost beach trip for my friend and I and this was easily one of our favorite activities. The museum is free, but donations are appreciated and available by cash and card near the entrance. The museum is small, but packed with cool stuff. There is a touch tide pool, wave simulations, and a new baby octopus! I spent an extensive amount of time playing in the touch tide pool. And the photo opportunities were unreal! I'll be back soon, and if you go to see Newport, you have to stop here.
  • Informative, great little center. Loved the tidal pool and various activities. Staff were really kind to us.
  • Love love love. Free and a must stop when in the area. Great nature walk around the center. Great little beach. Fiddler crabs galore. Every year they have a free behind the scenes event which is wonderful.
  • Educational and informative. The exhibits were nicely done and the octopus was entertaining to watch.Great for all ages!
  • I have no idea why anyone would say its not worth the money they charge for admission. Its free. Of course donations are welcomed as they operate on grants and funding which is very limited. Maybe a couple of dollars was just much for Nathan. Apparently, not one that respects sea life and the need to help our oceans.
