State Park Hiking Trail
Spend a day on the coast and admire the unusual play of waves at Devils Punchbowl State Natural Area. The highlight of the park is a natural rock bowl, the result of the collapse of two coastal caves. The bowl is partially open to the ocean, allowing waves to enter. During high surf, you can watch the waves violently swirl and foam inside the bowl. The coastline is lined with different rock formations and tide pools. In addition to wave-watching, the park offers opportunities for surfing, hiking, and picnicking. Whales migrate through this area and, in season, you can easily spot them from the beach. Where to stay in Newport

In Newport, the majority of the lodgings are inside old, renovated grand Victorians near the coast or cottages close to the beach. If you're interested in accommodations on the water (cove, bay, or beach), look into the city's inns. The Yaquina Bay area provides excellent views and access to the nearby national park of the same name, while a few economy accommodations are located in the town center.

  • The view from the parking area is so-so. If you find your way to the trail leading down however, this area has wonderful tidepools and wildlife.  more »
  • Well worth the stop when it is high tide. The punch bowl is unique and beautiful. Great to see at low tide but not as dramatic.  more »
  • Devil's Punchbowl is very interesting and worth seeing, The views from the top are wonderful - seeing dozens of windsurfers and beautiful beaches was well worth it.....  more »
