Zabar's, New York City

(4.3/5 based on 460+ reviews on the web)
The smell of freshly baked bread wafts through the air as customers fill the aisles anxious to get their order at Zabar's. This busy store is the epitome of New York, with its delicious foods and constant buzz. Fresh chocolate croissants are plated for breakfast and cheese from every corner of the world is on display and offered in samples. The store offers a constant supply of fresh bagels, deli meats, gift baskets, specialty pantry items, coffee, and smoked fish. The family-run business started as a humble stall at a farmer's market in the early 1920s, and today represents a New York landmark frequently referenced in pop culture and on television shows. • Take the children on the last day, New Yorkers feel for shopping. I bought bags, bread, condiments, coffee, tea, etc. How the daughter to buy the cheese until the end has stopped, but still regrets.

  • Zabar's is a most happy sensory experience from the moment you enter the shop. It is full from top to bottom with exquisite products. I LOVE to slowly walk the aisles to see all they have to offer. Th...  more »
  • I am fortunate to live 3 blocks from Zabar's so I know of what I speak. For a classic NYC foodie experience, it doesn't get any better than this. Downstairs you have the spectacular variety of cheeses...  more »

  • Great selection of products and good service. Two stories - first floor is food products, including a great selection of cheeses, cooked food, and various specialty or hard-to-find food products. Second floor is of kitchen/cooking tools and goods. I'd say the prices are reasonable for this selection and type of products.
  • A classic of the Upper West Side. A great place for fine meats, fishes, fresh bread, cheese and olives. It's a bit over priced (naturally) and over hyped. However, they do sometimes have sales at the end of the day such as half price sushi and sandwiches and deals on fresh bread and bagels. Worth visiting for specialty items or at least once.
  • Rugelach, bagels, lox, knishes. These are things that I love and Zabar's has some of the best. When it's not packed, it's also just a great store to wander.
  • Zabars is a Nyc institution. It's must visit if on the upper west side. Great baked goods, lox and shmear sandwiches and babka. Do it.
  • A classic, Manhattan/NYC staple grocery and specialty store - Zabar's has some of the best items in the city (but at a price). You can find some great deals here if you come often and take the time to check out the items. Their cheese / olive selection is amazing and so is their bread section. My favorite Zabar's trip includes: freshly squeezed orange juice (one of the best I've ever tasted), a cheese selection and a French baguette. Purchase all three and your set for a picnic nearby on the Hudson. Their coffee beans are also great. If you go up to their mezzanine, you can find some kitchen housewares.
