The Strand Bookstore is an independent bookstore located at 828 Broadway, at the corner of East 12th Street in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, two blocks south of Union Square. In addition to the main location, the store's Central Park kiosk is open on fair weather days at the corner of Fifth Avenue and East 60th Street. The company's slogan is "18 Miles Of Books", as featured on its stickers, T-shirts, and other merchandise.History and descriptionThe Strand was opened by Benjamin Bass in 1927 on nearby Fourth Avenue, in what was known as "Book Row", which was established as early as 1890, and which had at the time 48 bookstores. Bass's son Fred took over the business in 1956 and soon moved the store to the present location at the corner of East 12th Street and Broadway. Fred's daughter Nancy is co-owner of the store, and is also married to U.S. Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon. The store occupies three and a half floors, using half a floor for offices and one additional floor as warehouse space. As of December 2011, the store had 2.5 million books.Besides the main store and Central Park kiosk, an additional location, the "Strand Book Annex", opened in the 1980s and was originally located on Front Street in the South Street Seaport complex. It moved in 1996 to Fulton and Gold Streets in the Financial District, but finally closed on September 22, 2008 due to rent increases.

  • My daughter really wanted to go here as she had heard about it on Booktube. Amazing! Great selection & prices! Cool neighborhood. Check it out.  more »
  • We are a family of readers and we spent several hours at the Stand Bookstore on our recent trip to New York. It is a really good bookstore, with new and used books. We bought a lot of books too.  more »
  • I love visiting bookstores in different cities, and the Strand has such a plethora of selections! An absolute must if you are a book lover and want to support independent bookstores.  more »

  • This is a lovely bookstore, and one that you could get lost in (when I visited, I jokingly asked one of the staff if they were accepting applications for tenants). They have a staggering selection of books, both old and new, as well as some things that aren't books. They have a large selection of leather-bound classics, some of them so beautiful that it feels like a crime to do anything that might damage them. The staff are also very kind and helpful, and they clearly all are very passionate about books. If I ever come back to NYC, I will be sure to come here again, and hopefully be able to spend more time there.
  • NYC staple. Must visit for book worms. New and used books. You can spend hours just walking around and browsing all of the various sections. Staff is incredible, very knowledgeable and helpful. Always pretty busy. Usually a great outdoor sale where you can find some real gems for under 5 bucks.
  • Although it lost a bit of it's old bookstore charm after a major renovation some years ago, this is bookstore Mecca for New Yorkers. Miles and miles of hardcovers and paperbacks on several floors should have what you are looking for. They take donations of books (from a shopping bag's worth to entire personal libraries) as well. And if somehow you walk out of the Strand without a book you can leave with one of their eponymous T-shirts or tote bags.
  • The strand is one of my favorite places in NYC. I easily come here once a month. The place is massive and is always packed. People here are so energetic and helpful when you actually need something. The organization is amazing, with fun headers for each table. They stay very current and up to date with all the new hot books, but also have as many odd books you've never heard of that are fun to dig up. They also have sale books for $1!
  • Have been coming to this bookstore over 25 years. Love the selections of books. Back then they had a great area in basement along wall for new arrival oversized non fiction books. That is since gone. The store can get very crowded and warm at times on some floors. I also remember when many books here were 50% off.
