Neue Galerie New York, New York City
Categories: Art Museums, Museums
Neue Galerie New York houses 20th-century German and Austrian art and design. In an old mansion on Fifth Avenue, two gallery floors display art from 1900s Vienna, and German art across various movements of the early 20th century. The Vienna collection explores the relationship between the fine arts and the decorative arts, with works by artists like Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann, and Adolf Loos. In the collection of German art, discover movements such as the Blaue Reiter and its circle, the Brucke, and the Bauhaus. Two close friends, Serge Sabarsky and Ronald S. Lauder, created the concept for the museum. Unfortunately, Sabarsky died before the museum was realized, but Lauder continued with the creation of the museum in memory of his friend. It is common that people seek indoor programs these days, so there were a lot of people in the queue to enter. However, the Gallery is tiny and the line was outside. There is an awning to protect visitors and the entrance is very slow because there are checking bags and get x-ray 25 minutes to get in. I found very little careful with visitors leave all in the rain in this function. Worth thinking about a shelter for a rainy day. After all, in NYC, rain is not a rarity. But, other than that, the collection is very good and the building, very well taken care of.show original
Visited this gallery for the first time on September 3, 2016. Beautiful gallery in what must have been someone's home back in the day. "The Woman in Gold" is stunning, and the docents are very attentive. Additionally, the cafe on the first floor---awesome. I ordered crepes and a latte--some of the best food I've ever had in NY.
The very best in Viennese art !! And in one of the best buildings- A jewel Btw the food in the resturant - Oygood!!
Beautiful gallery with a selection of Klimt paintings and stunning turn of the century Austrian jewellery and household objects. Currently suggested entry as no exhibition on. Lovely shop. Very over-rated cafe however -nothing like a Viennese cafe.
Nice collection of Austro-Germanic art including design related items such as furniture, jewelry and tableware. (Some of the latter items are also on display at the Cooper Hewitt up 5th Avenue.) Stop for a coffee and pastry downstairs at Cafe Sabarsky and spend some quality time in conversation or just reading the newspaper.
The Neue Galerie has three main rooms showcasing 20th century Austrian and German works. The quaint shop offers an impressive selection of literature and other souvenirs ranging from embossed journals to herbal teas. While I didn't get a chance to try the cafe, the line snaked around the foyer and almost out the doors. Keep in mind photography and videography is not allowed.
