Our whole family spent several hours browsing at this bookstore. It's a terrific collection of used books. And supports a very worthy cause. Once we were in there, we actually forgot about everything ...  more »

Great location, and the space is really fun to hang out in. Staffed by volunteers and stocked by donations, all proceeds go to the Housing Works project, so you feel good about spending the super-reas...  more »

This was a good used bookstore with great selection in a very open, airy setting. We were able to sit, enjoy a coffee, and use their wifi in a nice setting. Book were reasonably priced.  more »

My favorite used bookstore in NYC. Great cafe in the back. Friendly staff. They have amazing concerts and readings. First weekend of the month the whole store is discounted. Plus all proceeds go to a great case.

I love this place and find myself popping in here even if only for a few minutes if I'm near. The simple way to start off is to call it as it is--a great reasonably priced used bookshop. It's also a reasonably priced cafe (with alcohol). You're not going to get anything crazy fancy here, but it's solid for sipping and flipping pages of great reads. I've also asked to share tables with people when it gets busy and have met some great folks. They have some light food fare that can also tie ya down for a bit (though I do love going to the Soho Halal Cart down the street). Most importantly, all their profits go to a good cause--helping folks in the NYC area with AIDS. They also have a schedule of events they out on during the evenings, "The Moth" Story Slams anyone?! Feel free to grab a gratis condom or two on your way out. Play it safe NYC!

Old school bookstore with spiral staircase and wooden shelves. I love this place.. a guaranteed quiet place wheree i would go and study for hours.

My favorite book store around and the proceeds go to a great cause! I almost always find something here, stock is constantly changing.

After being an avid HW book shopped at the branches for many yrs, I just learned about this great place recently. Actually worth a field trip from uptown. Kinda feels like a tiny Strand.

Where to stay in New York City

The first step to finding accommodations in New York City is finding the right neighborhood. Manhattan, where most visitors end up, offers some of the most expensive rooms in the world, though there are lower-budget options, such as hostels with shared restrooms. Reduce your costs by basing yourself in one of the outer boroughs, but beware of low-end motels where you may end up sharing the premises with hourly customers. Alternatively, stay along the New Jersey shore, offering all the major chain hotels at considerably lower prices than their Manhattan equivalents.
