They are finally adding safety nets on the pedestrian walkway. Its about time after so many jumped off the Bridge. I used to cross it with my skateboard at night until the night I passed some items left behind by a jumper. Cell phone opened and battery placed aside neatly, coat and purse I notified the officer at the entrance at Fort Lee. It was a very macabre experience. On the good side I strongly suggest visiting the Little Light house by the bridge on the NY side, the only working lighthouse I believe in NYC its cute and was immortalized in a children's book.

A sorta nice looking bridge, much better to use than the Lincoln tunnel at least in terms of price and aesthetic value. Could've probably chosen a better color than grey, but the bridge looks nice and is designed well.

Driving across this massive bridge can be a test of patience, but take a ride below the bridge on the New Jersey side and enjoy the views of the span as well as the skyline of New York. Take note of the "Little Red Lighthouse" underneath the New York side of the bridge. You can grab a whole bunch of very scenic pictures from right underneath and just off to the side of the bridge. The road under the bridge is kind of interesting in itself. Give it a try before the decide to close it off to the public for security reasons.

It is because of the George Washington Bridge that there is heavy traffic on the westbound Cross-Bronx Expressway. Trucks are not allowed on the lower level, so they have to cram on to the ramp that leads to the upper level. What is worse about this is that only the 2 left lanes lead to that ramp, while trucks travel on the rightmost lanes. Trucks from the Major Deegan Expressway have to cross so many lanes in such a short distance because of this. The steepness of the ramps give trucks difficulty in reaching the bridge. For cars going to the lower level, there is a tight s-turn that can cause accidents if drivers are not careful enough. The only way to improve traffic flow in Upper Manhattan and in the Bronx during rush hour is to replace this bridge with a better one that would more suited to handle the busiest crossing traffic in the world.
-
A lot of bang for the buck during rush hour. Leaving NYC is free, getting back in about $16.00.
