Economy Candy, New York City

#24 of 117 in Shopping in New York City
At Economy Candy, browse through countless aisles stacked with candies both vintage and modern. Opened in the wake of the Great Depression in 1937, this is the oldest candy store in New York City. A triangular yellow sign that says “Proceed with Candy” welcomes you in the front of the store. Check out a large table in the center filled with virtually every sweet from your childhood, including gummy animals, jelly beans, pixie sticks, wax lips, and mega lollipops. An extensive selection of dried fruit, nuts, and halvah is also on display. For a taste of old New York, try a dried apricot coated in chocolate. Comic book lovers will enjoy leafing through a stack of old comic books. The store also sells baseball cards, vintage gumball machines, box tins, board games, and lunchboxes. This place will suddenly brings you straight to your childhood in less than a second. The store have all classic and modern candies that you can ask for, candies that will make you remember about them cause you forgot their existence as you grow up. They are different prices, from the economic through the fancy. The only thing I didn't like was the lack of welcoming and interaction between the staff and customers. It's a place where you become a child, when start to remember everything from back then, the joy comes back... Till you talk to the staff. They cut my emotions in seconds. Besides that, everything is awesome.

Pros: Tons of selection. Staff is helpful enough. Hard-to-beat prices. Cons: little organization and room to move

This place is the best. Exactly like the name. They have all kinds of classic candy that will bring you back to your childhood and the prices are reasonable, especially by the pound. This is either a great place to bring kids or a terrible one, depending on how you look at it.

Absolutely LOVE this place! They have anything you could possibly imagine including all of the old school favs. We make a trip here a few times a year and it's nothing but a great time.

This store feels like a hidden gem even though everyone I know seems to know about it. Small store, very hole in the wall but packed to the rafters with every type of candy imaginable, even some harder to find imports. The 99¢ table is great for more common candies, too! I always pick up a few Cadbury bars and vintage trading cards when I'm in the neighborhood. Take caution though, as the tiny store fills up quickly and has of late become more popular with tourists.

Where to stay in New York City

The first step to finding accommodations in New York City is finding the right neighborhood. Manhattan, where most visitors end up, offers some of the most expensive rooms in the world, though there are lower-budget options, such as hostels with shared restrooms. Reduce your costs by basing yourself in one of the outer boroughs, but beware of low-end motels where you may end up sharing the premises with hourly customers. Alternatively, stay along the New Jersey shore, offering all the major chain hotels at considerably lower prices than their Manhattan equivalents.
