East Village, New York City

4.1
#22 of 29 in Neighborhoods in New York City
Neighborhood Tourist Spot
East Village is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Manhattan. Its boundary to the north is Gramercy Park and Stuyvesant Town, to the south by the Lower East Side, and to the east by the East River. Generally, although definitions vary on the neighborhood's exact street boundaries, the East Village is considered to be the area east of Broadway to the East River, between 14th Street and Houston Street. The area was once generally considered to be part of the Lower East Side, but began to develop its own identity and culture in the late 1960s, when many artists, musicians, students and hippies began to move into the area, attracted by cheap rents and the base of Beatniks who had lived there since the 1950s. The neighborhood has become a center of the counterculture in New York, and is known as the birthplace and historical home of many artistic movements, including punk rock and the Nuyorican literary movement. It has also been the site of protests and riots.

  • because many of the musicians with whom I grew up have started here to play but more on that later. The East Village is the area of the 4th Avenue and the East River and between East 14th Street and East Houston Street. It is not very large, only a few blocks in any direction. End of the 60ties of 20th century the image that you had previously made by the East Village changed the heavily Jewish and Russian/Ukrainian population slowly disappeared. The "Beatnix', which had cultural production of at that time discovered the area as a cheap residential alternative to the West Village and Chelsea. From this arose an alternative cultural scene, which is not only limited to music and Visual Arts but all forms of expression. The punk rock began its triumphal March here, but also well known bands like the stones, the who, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd began their US career and others at the Fillmore East, which was housed in an old Yiddish Theater. Later, there was even the CBGBs, here sizes occurred such as Madonna, Patti Smith, Blondie, the Ramones, Sonic Youth and many others before they were known. The East Village also has a very good food culture. There are beautiful tours, ...auch free.

  • The area where we stayed during our stay in NY. Plenty of bars to hang on no matter what day it is and very interesting restaurants to try. Two favorites are Whitman's serves burgers and Caracas, serving Venezuelan arepas (important to distinguish from the Colombian:)

Where to stay in New York City

The first step to finding accommodations in New York City is finding the right neighborhood. Manhattan, where most visitors end up, offers some of the most expensive rooms in the world, though there are lower-budget options, such as hostels with shared restrooms. Reduce your costs by basing yourself in one of the outer boroughs, but beware of low-end motels where you may end up sharing the premises with hourly customers. Alternatively, stay along the New Jersey shore, offering all the major chain hotels at considerably lower prices than their Manhattan equivalents.
