Belvedere Castle, New York City

Castle · Tourist Spot
Belvedere Castle is a folly in Central Park in Manhattan, New York City. It contains exhibit rooms and an observation deck, and since 1919, has also housed the official Central Park weather station.

Belvedere Castle was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in 1867–1869. An architectural hybrid of Gothic and Romanesque styles, Vaux's design called for a Manhattan schist and granite structure with a corner tower with conical cap, with the existing lookout over parapet walls between them. Its name comes from belvedere, which means "beautiful view" in Italian.: 162

  • A bit smaller than it appears in pictures, but a very easy hike in the middle of Central Park! Provides great views in all directions.  more »
  • This castle is in central park, it is a quiet place without a lot of people, it is my favorite place to sunbathe, with the view of the castle. The central park is very extensive and there are little.....  more »

  • Belvedere Castle located in the middle of Central Park in Manhattan, New York City. It contains exhibit rooms and an observation deck. It is one of Central Park's five visitor centers. Its a great place to explore (the castle) in the heart of central Park, most Iconic city in the world! View from up there is spectacular as much as you can walk up to, keep in mind there's no elevator and the staircase is narrow and steep.
  • We had fun exploring the castle and looking at the different things that were here and taking photos from different angles in different places amongst the castle. It's a good landmark to see on your way through the park, but it won't provide you with too much entertainment unless you are really into that sort of thing - the history might interest some.
  • A unique castle nestled into Central Park but a bit of a trek on a hot summer day. Not much to do there and you can take photos in minutes then be done. As adults it was worth the look but you get ones would be bored. It would be great of they enhanced the experience for younger ones. A castle idea is very romantic and adventurous so why not create a bit more of an experience for both.
  • A small place to take a break from walking around. It has some lovely views and from here there are several paths through dense forest that makes you feel away from a bustling city. The docents here were super friendly.
  • Beautiful castle in the middle of Central Park in New York City. On a hot date this is a great place to stop and cool off because the inside is air-conditioned. They’re beautiful views from the castle and it is well-maintained. Great spot for pictures.
