42nd Street, New York City

42nd Street is a major crosstown street in the New York City borough of Manhattan, known for its theaters, especially near the intersection with Broadway at Times Square. It is also the name of the region of the theater district (and, at times, the red-light district) near that intersection. The street has held a special place in New Yorkers' imaginations since at least the turn of the 20th century, and is the site of some of New York's best known buildings, including (east to west) the United Nations, Chrysler Building, Grand Central Terminal, Times Square and the Port Authority Bus Terminal.HistoryEarly historyDuring the American Revolutionary War, a cornfield near the present location of the New York Public Library at 42nd Street was where General George Washington angrily attempted to rally his troops after the British landing at Kip's Bay, which scattered many of the American militiamen. Washington's attempt put him in danger of being captured, and his officers had to persuade him to leave. The rout eventually subsided into an orderly retreat.

  • I NEVER go to McDonald's. I was in Manhattan 10/28 and dying of thirst. I am CHEAP, and the 7 11 I was looking for to get an inexpensive drink was 3 long avenues over. I noticed a McDonald's and decid...  more »
  • As expected, it is extremely crowded. It was a bit overwhelming to me, I think everyone should experience Time Square once in their life. The energy is great.  more »
  • Like the rest of Times Square this place is a traffic nightmare. I’d suggest avoiding it unless you have to go.  more »

  • I chose 42nd Street Photo for their great prices -- the best I found on the web. (I've purchased a Canon body and two lenses from them, as well as an assortment of accessories.) I was also very pleased with their customer service. The phone sales person was not only very knowledgeable, but also very responsive when there was a glitch in one of my orders. I would definitely purchase from them again.
  • Great site and experience with 42nd St. They had all the brands/models that I was researching. Their site was useful and easy to navigate. Prices were the best I could find. Customer service person was kind and helpful on the phone. I got a call that my order was received and ready to ship! That has never happened before. I also got extra info about the camera I picked. I'm so glad I chose this company and check out future purchases here first!
  • 42nd Street Photo is so helpful, has the best prices, and gets you your equipment very fast. I ordered a Canon 6d from them a few months ago and was overjoyed with the customer service and speed of delivery. Great camera company - I go to them with all of my camera needs. Thank you so much for your great work!
  • Greetings... I chose to purchase 2 different Nikon lens from 42nd St photo and I am please with the outcome. When Best Buy, would not price compete with this establishment I ordered from them directly. My experience from the explanations of the lens and my many phone calls were right on. No automated service, No sales pitch, No gimmicks, No being pushy, and no dial 1 for the operator, and a real person by the name of Adam just plain helpful! I am so please with my new lenses. I am a new customer to 42nd St photo and will continue to purchase from this store in the future. I am grateful and wanted to express the pretty awesome Customer Service from staff!!!! Many blessings to you Adam. I appreciate your being kind, helpful, & cordial. Thank you.
  • Best Experience with this group. I always try to support smaller businesses vs larger chain stores. They shipped the camera out very quickly with no issues at all. I have recommended them to other folks looking to buy cameras!

Where to stay in New York City

The first step to finding accommodations in New York City is finding the right neighborhood. Manhattan, where most visitors end up, offers some of the most expensive rooms in the world, though there are lower-budget options, such as hostels with shared restrooms. Reduce your costs by basing yourself in one of the outer boroughs, but beware of low-end motels where you may end up sharing the premises with hourly customers. Alternatively, stay along the New Jersey shore, offering all the major chain hotels at considerably lower prices than their Manhattan equivalents.
