  • It’s a great escape from the city life as it is just less than an hour drive from Houston. And it is also a place to cool down from the heat in summer times, and it is ideal to hike in winter times as...  more »
  • My Aunt used to live in Phelps at the end of Watson Lake Rd, We would often visit and my cousins and I used to explore the forest every chance we got. I don't get up that ways as much as i'd like, but...  more »

  • Beautiful park. We always enjoy our time here. Great place for all your outdoor activities. Easily accessible. Loads of quality time in nature with friends and family, what more could you ask? 😍😁
  • The Sam Houston National Forest is a great place to mountain bike. Not too many technical trails however they do have a lot of nice well maintained trails and because it's a Pine Forest there's not too many roots. Beautiful tall trees. Lone Star Trail goes through this national forest all the way from Huntsville State Park to Coldspring double Lake camping area. There are many signs posted once you're on the trail. The ranger station or office at the entrance of Huntsville State Park will give you Maps and the people there are very helpful to tell you where things are. One good thing to remember is during hunting season when you're riding your bike or hiking through the forest make sure you wear hunter's orange just in case someone mistakes you for a deer or a wild hog.
  • It can't possibly be so busy here that it's a difficult task to keep the restrooms somewhat clean, or stocked, or well lit. General Houston is cool, and though it was the only spot that was, the landscaping was well kept around him. Must be the best job ever... is it really necessary to have two people on staff in the small 10x12 visitors center?
  • Such a cool place to viait and drive through. Easy to navigate. Clear signs posted everywhere. The park is great to stop at for a picnic or to camp. The drive is so soothing. Love love love this place
  • A wonderful hidden jewel that a majority of Houstonians don't know about. To really enjoy this forest you have to be willing to get off the beaten road and that means preparation: water, snacks, map, compass, first aid kit in a day pack. The Lone Star Hiking Trail crosses the East Fork of the San Jacinto River with a beautiful metal span bridge where you can hear Barred Owls hooting in the distance.
