Mardi Gras World, New Orleans

4.4
Set alongside the Mississippi River, Mardi Gras World creates floats for the world-famous festival and its accompanying parades. Blaine Kern Studios (the company that sponsors the tours) serves as a major supplier for many Mardi Gras festivities and builds the set pieces from scratch. You can tour the warehouse to discover the methods, techniques, and processes used in their production, plus you'll get a glimpse industry's history. Bring a camera--the tour allows up-close photos of the floats as well as an opportunity to take pictures in a classic Mardi Gras costume. A shuttle pick-up from downtown New Orleans is included in the price of the ticket. • We took the tour in the afternoon and had a pretty big group. The tour guides are very knowledgeable and friendly. You can watch people working on the floats and take lots of pictures. You also get a ...  more »

  • If you really want to understand Mardi Gras, this tour was nice. I was a little bummed that the first 15 minutes of it starts out with a DVD that you watch in their theater. The tour guide then reiter...  more »

  • This was such a cool place to visit when we were in New Orleans. My kids especially loved the tour which included detailed information provided about the various floats and characters. There is a 15 minute film in the beginning of the tour. It’s educational but I would have been cool without having to watch it. I would definitely recommend a visit here. It costs to get in and it costs to park on the lot if you drive there.
  • We learned more from the 15 minute video then on the walking tour. The tour was not good. It was fun to see the floats and pieces placed on the floats but definitely not $20 a person worth of fun. You can see their best pieces on entering the gift shop and throughout the gift shop without paying. Don't waste your money.
  • This place was pretty neat for a school band tour. We got to see Mini Mardi Gras floats and decorations without the craziness. Each kid (and parent) got to make a Mardi Gras mask with paints and glitter. Cool senior band trip stop.
  • Visited on Christmas Eve(2017). Satisfied my visit. They explains and display all the history of Mardi Gras parades and props they make. At the end of tour they give out King Cake with baby doll inside (one doll per cake), and I happened to have one in mine. You get the ticket for the tour at gift shop desk.
  • glad I did. The tour was very informative and our tour guide was very knowledgeable and passionate about the whole subject of Mardi Gras. We were also able to go into the building next door, which was very cool, would love to be invited to a party there. The price was right and they even pick up and drop off, our driver was hilarious. I can't say enough..but definitely check it out.

Where to stay in New Orleans

Though you can walk to most tourist attractions in New Orleans from a hotel in the central business district, remember that many other parts of town feature less expensive and equally comfortable accommodations. Smaller hotels and private guesthouses in quiet residential neighborhoods offer not only good local food and spacious rooms, but can also allow you to explore the city's culture away from overwhelming tourist crowds. To reduce your carbon footprint during your stay, consider one of French Quarter's many green or eco-friendly hotels.
