Mardi Gras World, New Orleans

4.4
Set alongside the Mississippi River, Mardi Gras World creates floats for the world-famous festival and its accompanying parades. Blaine Kern Studios (the company that sponsors the tours) serves as a major supplier for many Mardi Gras festivities and builds the set pieces from scratch. You can tour the warehouse to discover the methods, techniques, and processes used in their production, plus you'll get a glimpse industry's history. Bring a camera--the tour allows up-close photos of the floats as well as an opportunity to take pictures in a classic Mardi Gras costume. A shuttle pick-up from downtown New Orleans is included in the price of the ticket. • Didn't think this would be much of a tour but it was really enjoyable. The floats are amazing and those who design and make them are very talented.  more »
  • A great place to visit where you'll get an informative tour that just might blow you away. It did me. The tour begins with a video. The warehouse/ studios are huge. As you take the tour, you'll see ho...  more »
  • We've never been to Mardi Gras, and this place was well worth finding. It's huge; they literally build most all the floats you see in the Mardi Gras parades. (Fact: There are 54 different Mardi Gras p...  more »

  • I've never been to Mardi Gras and never had much of a desire to go. But after having been through Mardi Gras World and seen how extraordinary and creative the floats are, I'm now inspired to go. The cost of the tickets is high, but if you want a behind the scenes look of some of the things that go into Mardi Gras, then this is worth at least one visit. I can see me coming back here every few years.
  • Cool place to see lots of Mardi Gras stuff. This Is the working studio and warehouse of Kern Studios. Tour begins with a 15 minute video and a "free" piece of King cake then its off to the studios and the warehouse. It's pretty cool to see the design and build process and look at all the stored pieces but the whole tour (without video) is only about 20 or 25 minutes, then they leave you inside the warehouse to wander around on your own. Is it worth $20 a person? Probably not but it was a rainy day and we were looking for something to do. Addendum - our tour guide was very good. He knew all the history and was knowledgeable about the krewes, the floats, the parades, etc. Without him this tour would have been a bust
  • Great place with the kids! They also have a little shop!! They also have a 15 minute show about Mardi Gras and you get king cakečŹ░ (It tastes just like a cinnamon roll!) Go there it is very cool!!čÄş
  • We did a tour of Mardi Gras world on our last day of our anniversary trip in New Orleans. We got a good deal on Groupon for two people that was equivalent to the price of one ticket for two. The location is where all of the floats for the annual Mardi Gras parades are designed and constructed. We were able to take a complimentary shuttle by Mardi Gras World from the Hilton to Mardi Gras World to save us a 20 minute walk. The tour began in a movie screening room where were able to dress up in Mardi Gras themed attire and take pictures. Afterwards, we watched a short video about the history of Mardi Gras and how it has evolved over the years. We then proceeded to walk into the actual warehouse where the construct the floats. It was very hot and muggy inside due to the warehouse being right beside the Mississippi River and the rain. Our tour guide was very informative when explaining the process from brainstorming the theme to float erection. There is ample opportunities to take pictures of the hundreds of float props. Overall, it was a very nice experience. If you are looking to do something to kill some time in New Orleans, we would recommend to check out Mardi Gras World!
  • Once you get past the heat, you start to feel super small in a warehouse of large floats and status. To see people working, you know it's so much more than a parade. Fantastic and super fun!

Where to stay in New Orleans

Though you can walk to most tourist attractions in New Orleans from a hotel in the central business district, remember that many other parts of town feature less expensive and equally comfortable accommodations. Smaller hotels and private guesthouses in quiet residential neighborhoods offer not only good local food and spacious rooms, but can also allow you to explore the city's culture away from overwhelming tourist crowds. To reduce your carbon footprint during your stay, consider one of French Quarter's many green or eco-friendly hotels.
