Lake Lawn Metairie Cemetery, New Orleans

4.7
#9 of 30 in Historic Sites in New Orleans
Cemetery Tourist Spot
One of the largest and most historically significant graveyards in the city, Lake Lawn Metairie Cemetery is the final resting place for more than 9,000 people, including Louisiana governors and notable Civil War leaders. Originally a race track, the site was turned into a cemetery in 1872, but the oval layout remains. The cemetery is known for its impressive collection of elaborate marble tombs and funeral statuary, including works from renowned sculptors, such as Albert Weiblen and Alexander Doyle. The cemetery offers little shade, so make sure you have sun protection if you visit during the warmer months. Where to stay in New Orleans

Though you can walk to most tourist attractions in New Orleans from a hotel in the central business district, remember that many other parts of town feature less expensive and equally comfortable accommodations. Smaller hotels and private guesthouses in quiet residential neighborhoods offer not only good local food and spacious rooms, but can also allow you to explore the city's culture away from overwhelming tourist crowds. To reduce your carbon footprint during your stay, consider one of French Quarter's many green or eco-friendly hotels.
