Garden District, New Orleans

(4.6/5 based on 5,500+ reviews on the web)
Noted for its well-preserved antebellum private mansions and meticulously manicured gardens, Garden District serves as a reminder of the city's golden years of prosperity. You can take a guided walking tour of this photogenic neighborhood, where residents take great pride in their well-cared-for properties. Some mansions even open their doors for special-event tours, allowing visitors a quick peek at their English-style gardens. Originally laid out in the 1820s, the neighborhood first attracted "new money" residents looking to outshine one another by building and continuously expanding their Greek Revival houses. Visit the neighborhood's lower district where you can explore trendy boutiques, bars, and restaurants. Put Garden District on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our New Orleans trip itinerary maker.

  • Love this area could just walk around for days. Nice people, beautiful houses. It is very dark at night so I would not walk back to a hotel alone.
  • After going online and planning my own walking tour (easy enough to do, no need to pay for a tour), we walked up and down streets, looking at the gorgeous homes and learning a bit about them. One note...  more »
  • Pretty houses but that's about it. There was a cemetery tour which was pretty interesting given the geography of NOLA but there are others in the area.
