  • Having lived and worked in New Mexico all my life I have seen and enjoyed and appreciated its natural surroundings on innumerable occasions. Any chance to get out and breathe the fresh air of our national forests is one worthwhile. Over the years I have watched as the facilities and accessibility have greatly improved lending to the quality of each visit.
  • We hiked the Tsankawi Prehistoric Site Trail. There are three wooden ladders along the way, two of which must be ascended/descended in order to complete the loop. The loop is posted as 1.5 miles. Along the upper loop, there are shards of ancient pottery on the ground WHICH YOU MAY COLLECT TO LEAVE IN CERTAIN AREAS, BUT YOU MAY NOT LEAVE WITH ANY. There are numerous caves, some of which have smoke stains, so they were obviously cooking quarters. The paths along some areas are deep and narrow, requiring one to walk in a balanced, elegant manner which evokes this amazing bygone civilization. Petroglyph markings are readily seen, best if you back up to 'get the whole picture'. Interpretation was available via a recyclable brochure. It was a terrific experience. A small fee is required. Do take water to drink. Do use the restroom before you begin. Do this in the cooler part of the year.
  • This is a huge forest surrounding the city of Santa Fe. It has dozens of well marked trails, rating from easy to strenuous. Terrain ranges from hilly high desert to mountainous (over 12,000 feet). Trail maps are available online and at local businesses such as Travel Bug. Awesome snow shoeing when it snows in the mountains. Check out Meet up website for hiking groups.
  • Compact park with an impressive echo from the natural cliff. Mostly paved trail from the parking lot to the cliff and another unpaved nature trail off the parking lot. Nice place to stop and stretch your legs.
  • Had a wonderful time visiting all the lil Towns there are to see on the way to Colorado Springs... LOVE it. 🌲😘

Where to stay in Santa Fe

Though the downtown area contains most of Santa Fe's finest hotels, you can find plenty of equally comfortable inns and motels just outside this busy central district. Remember also that most of the city's centrally located hotels raise their prices during the height of the tourist season, so it is essential to look for deals and make reservations well in advance. To experience the true spirit of outdoor New Mexico while on holiday, consider sleeping under the stars at a campground just a short drive from Santa Fe's major urban attractions.
