Rockhound State Park was absolutely beautiful! The Visitors Center is very informative and the staff was super friendly. They have the trails marked off and they are very accessible. We even took her baby along with us. You do have to go off the trails to find any type of good rocks. And just for a heads up there are not really any geodes found in the direct area. We did stop at this super cool rock store right on the way out. The man that owned the building / shop was super informative. And they have awesome rocks from all over New Mexico.
My husband, pup and I stopped by here on out way out to Phoenix. It was a wonderful side trip!! The campground host was so incredibly kind to us, taking us right to where we could camp, and the Rangers were all helpful and so very kind. We wish we could have spent more time there! Oh, and the bathrooms were the best we had been in all trip, and probably the best we will see while traveling. They felt luxurious after some places we have stayed!
The views are awesome especially during the sunsets. They have great campgrounds and there's lot of wildlife.
A gem of a spot! Better water saving devices needed in the spotless, new bathrooms. Panoramic views are spectacular.
One of my absolute favorite parks. Hike to the top and watch the sunsets. Watch out for rattlers!!!!!!!!!!! Lots of beautiful rocks of many varieties that you can take with you!! Bring a hammer, maybe a chisel, and a bag. 15# maximum. Opal, jasper, perlite, rhyolite, thundereggs, and geodes seem to be the most common. Stop here for a few days, it'll be worth it!!! Seriously, the people are great and the hiking is as long or as short as you want. Oh, don't go in winter. It fills up and stays full. Not with rock hunters but the permanent residents of NM parks. Just saying.
