New Market Battlefield Military Museum, New Market

(2.4/5 based on 95+ reviews on the web)
Owned and operated by John M. Bracken, New Market Battlefield Military Museum offers much to see. The majority of the collection consists of items from the American Civil War. There are original items from ancient Egypt, World War II, and everything in between. And this is all the private collection of John M. Bracken. This is the most impressive Civil War museum in the state of Virginia if not the east coast, and no one leaves disappointed!

  • This is an unusually valuable museum. It was assembled through private collections, and actually tells a coherent story with military relics from all major American wars, from Independence forward. I was very impressed to see uniforms, bullets, and weapons from the War of 1812 and the Mexican War, as well as an abundance of relics from the Civil War: the main focus of this museum. The survey of the Civil War is quite thorough and also quite good, with a wide selection of primary sources posted for meditation. Once you have made your way through the Civil War, the displays continue to WW1, WW2, and Vietnam. The proprietor of the place lives in the building, I believe. As a Virginian, he prefers his own land to New York and Boston. Who doesn't? You won't get any computer screens, movie-quality soundtracks, or holograms in this place, but you can handle genuine Civil War shells and bullets. They are also available for purchase.
  • Don't waste $12 a person coming here. It's not admission to any battlefield and it's not run by any respected institution. All you will see here is displays telling you why the confederacy was great, the union just hated the people of the south, and most disturbingly that Andersonville prison was a good place and prisoners were treated well. This "museum" is ridiculous, don't waste your money.
  • This museum owner perpetrates deliberate deception by: - Posting signs indicating they sell tickets for the battlefield. - Posting signs discouraging visitors from proceeding to the battlefield museum. - Verbally misleading visitors about the battlefield museum's offerings. Complaints about this deception are so common that the battlefield museum has pre-printed forms and explanations available to help frustrated visitors. The museum itself contains some nice Civil (and other) War artifacts along with some unrelated but largely interesting items. It is however curated by the above-mentioned, deceptive individual and who appears to operate with no oversight. Opinion and un-reviewed historical assertions are mixed with historical explanation and interpretation. Full-disclosure for some: the Civil War exhibit is largely from the Confederate perspective, and after you've paid and when you are near the end of your tour through the many showcases, you'll find a section devoted to the WWII, German military.
  • Staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Packed with period relevant memorabilia.
  • The best of the best military collection including weapons, uniforms, images and more. Some of this is for sale.
