Mount Washington, New Hampshire

4.6
Mount Washington, called Agiocochook by some Native American tribes, is the highest peak in the Northeastern United States at 6288.2ft and the most prominent mountain east of the Mississippi River. The mountain is notorious for its erratic weather. On the afternoon of April 12, 1934, the Mount Washington Observatory recorded a windspeed of 231mph at the summit, the world record for most of the 20th century, and still a record for measured wind speeds not involved with a tropical cyclone. The mountain is located in the Presidential Range of the White Mountains, in the township of Sargent's Purchase, Coös County, New Hampshire. While nearly the whole mountain is in the White Mountain National Forest, an area of 60.3acre surrounding and including the summit is occupied by Mount Washington State Park. The Mount Washington Cog Railway ascends the western slope of the mountain, and the Mount Washington Auto Road climbs to the summit from the east. The mountain is popular with hikers (the Appalachian Trail crosses the summit). Other common activities include glider flying, and annual cycle and running races such as the Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb and Road Race.

  • I am so glad we decided to take the cog train up mount Washington. It’s a beautiful ride up and down with beautiful scenery along the way. Once you reach the top, it is mostly cloudy and windy, howeve...  more »
  • Could not believe the mountain top was CLOSED!! We were there in 70 degree weather last week and they have a policy that closes the auto highway the middle of October regardless of the weather or not....  more »
  • We went inside the info center for hiking advice, then crossed the road for the walk to Lost Lake. The lake itself was nothing special, but it gave us a good view of Tuckerman’s Ravine and Mt. Washing...  more »

  • The mountain of 4 seasons. The end of June 2017. When we started it was too hot then in a few hours the rain made us completely wet and then finally when we almost got to the top, the huge cloud covered us and super strong wind didn’t allow us to reach the summit. Have to come back again next year :) On our way back we saw a shirt-less man who was carrying ski on his back so probably there was snow somewhere as well :)
  • Not cheap to visit if you take the cog railway, but the views are pretty spectacular and it is definitely worth the visit at least once in a lifetime when visiting the White Mountains region. Look forward to driving up next time for a different experience.
  • Recently recorded the second coldest temperatures on the planet! Amazing place to visit. It can be cold and windy any day of the year so be prepared.
  • That was a lifetime experience for me. You can drive your car right to the summit. Be aware that you will be above the clouds and it’s way colder there than you could imagine. Sceneries during the ride are breathtaking. I’ve been planning this trip for two years and finally I made it:)
  • Tuckermans Ravine is an amazing hike and snowboard / ski down. Highly recommended, but some intense training prior is a must! Beautiful views from the summit.
