Mountain
Mount Washington, called Agiocochook by some Native American tribes, is the highest peak in the Northeastern United States at 6288.2ft and the most prominent mountain east of the Mississippi River. The mountain is notorious for its erratic weather. On the afternoon of April 12, 1934, the Mount Washington Observatory recorded a windspeed of 231mph at the summit, the world record for most of the 20th century, and still a record for measured wind speeds not involved with a tropical cyclone. The mountain is located in the Presidential Range of the White Mountains, in the township of Sargent's Purchase, Coös County, New Hampshire. While nearly the whole mountain is in the White Mountain National Forest, an area of 60.3acre surrounding and including the summit is occupied by Mount Washington State Park. The Mount Washington Cog Railway ascends the western slope of the mountain, and the Mount Washington Auto Road climbs to the summit from the east. The mountain is popular with hikers (the Appalachian Trail crosses the summit). Other common activities include glider flying, and annual cycle and running races such as the Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb and Road Race.

  • Mount Washington is the highest mountain in the White Mountains, 2000 metres high. You can all the way to the top. You can choose to drive, or with the steepest train course that exists ($ 69.00 per person) or with a small van if you don't dare to drive away. So we are going to drive, but also $38.00 but well worth the effort. You get all sorts of instructions something can happen and what you should do. Also you get a CD with it for the way there and the way back where the history which developed around the mountain has played is explained. It is a narrow road, along abysses, without guardrail and partly a gravel road. Pretty scary and also a lot of traffic. It was a holiday weekend here, Columbusdag on Monday, so many people were free. At some point you come above the tree line and you get a kind of lunar landscape. Very beautiful. All the way on top of the top is a weather station. This mountain has the worst weather of America and the wind that measured here is is the most powerful ever measured in the world. But we had above 18 degrees and plenty of Sun. That seems quite exceptional. Usually lies in the clouds. But what is the point to move up to drive over that kind of weigh?!? Above you have a kind of museum and there is a list of the people who died during the past 100 years trails. With name, date and reason of the accident. The there are 157 so far. On our way we have small trails run, but ... you can also walk all the way up. We found the car a bit more comfortable. When we were back down we have delicious picnic at 25 degrees in the Sun. Fun to do.

  • Had an AWESOME time. I went up on a very cloudy day and couldn't see much, so the next day that was very sunny and clear I went again and the view was breath taking! Defiantly recommend.  more »
