New Britain Museum of American Art, New Britain
(4.7/5 based on 240+ reviews on the web)
The New Britain Museum of American Art's founding in 1903 entitles the institution to be designated the first museum of strictly American art in the country. With particular strengths in colonial portraiture, the Hudson River School, American Impressionism, and the Ash Can School, not to mention the important mural series The Arts of Life in America by Thomas Hart Benton, the museum relies heavily on its permanent collection for exhibitions and programming, yet also displays a significant number of borrowed shows and work by emerging artists. The singular focus on American art and its panoramic view of American artistic achievement make the NBMAA a significant teaching resource available to the local, regional, and national public.

  • The new gallery space provides more opportunities for in-depth looks at different artists and styles, from colonial to 21st century. I was there for the opening of the second show in the Shaker Galler...  more »
  • The Museum of if it is worth to visit it, but its architecture, environment and landscaping is also very interesting. The collections are very good and well organized. The permanent collection is very good.

  • Fascinating museum! A must-see if you enjoy art museums. Exhibits are very well done and change regularly. First floor is more "Classical" American, modern and contemporary art is on the second floor. We spent a whole morning here walking around. The little cafe is cute.
  • All the renovations here have made this museum a wonderful place to visit!! If you have nothing better to do on a rainy day, this is a perfect activity even for the kids who will probably find something they enjoy too. The museum staff are very professional, and there's this atmosphere of warmth that I don't experience in other places like Wadsworth where they seem really uptight. Salvador Dahli's dedicated section of the museum is a sight worth seeing!! A definite 5 star rating is in order!!!
  • I lived in CT for 30 years and had no idea this museum was here! I came here with my mom to see a Salvador Dali exhibit and it was phenomenal. The other art here is quite interesting and you owe it to your self to check it out!
  • Absolutely wonderful. We brought our 3 year old and heads a blast in the children's area. They also had a nice Dali collection and many other exhibits is like to explore... without said 3yo.
  • Really a terrific museum! Nice exhibits, lively special events, and fantastic reciprocal membership program (NARM) at a very reasonable rate.
