New Britain Museum of American Art, New Britain

4.8
The New Britain Museum of American Art's founding in 1903 entitles the institution to be designated the first museum of strictly American art in the country. With particular strengths in colonial portraiture, the Hudson River School, American Impressionism, and the Ash Can School, not to mention the important mural series The Arts of Life in America by Thomas Hart Benton, the museum relies heavily on its permanent collection for exhibitions and programming, yet also displays a significant number of borrowed shows and work by emerging artists. The singular focus on American art and its panoramic view of American artistic achievement make the NBMAA a significant teaching resource available to the local, regional, and national public.

  • This is both a great museum and a local gem. I've been coming here since grade school field trips and I regularly take my family. There's a few rooms of Hudson River School paintings that are simply lovely. The top floor changes from time to time but often has great modern art. The museum has a great collection and cycles it often enough to reward repeat visits. The people who work there are nice, and clearly like working in a cool museum. They also have a great education department and offer art classes. I've taken my kids and it's made for a great family experience. Go if you can; it's a wonderful place.
  • And I have been to the New Britain Museum Of Art over 10 times. Need I say more. It is my favorite museum in Connecticut. I can’t wait to get back and see the new exhibit on the second floor. My husband really enjoyed the world war one Exhibit.
  • The Museum is a hidden gem, although the December first night seemed to be well attended. Such a good deal. Admission $12 including light appetizers .
  • Nice staff. The paintings were well lit and represented 18-1900s mostly. Modern art galley upstairs in open gallery space with lots of natural light. Pleased with the diversity of artists represented. Smaller museum, but well worth the visit.
  • In the short time I visited the Museum, I enjoyed myself and did not want to leave so soon. Since I live around New Britain it was quite close by. It can be visited for free on Saturdays from 10:00am to 12:00pm, which is nice.
