  • We had a wonderful time camping and hiking at Lake James State Park. All facilities were super clean for a campground. There was not a bad camping spot (we were in the Paddy's Creek area) and the Bear Boxes worked beautifully for additional storage. The only reason I gave it a 4 out of 5 stars was because my husband and his friend fished several times over the weekend and never caught anything. We didn't realize Lake James is known as the "Dead Sea of NC". Also, as an FYI there were no strenuous hikes. But as far as the campground goes, you couldn't ask for a better experience!
  • Great for family, clean swimming area. Life jackets provided is a plus! Clean bathrooms and changing facilities. Reasonable admission fee when lifeguard on duty. Canoes and kayaks are also available for rental.
  • If you enjoy bank fishing especially bank catfishing you won't find that here. All the land they talk about that lake james covers is all owned and posted minus the park, and guess what no night fishing from the banks in the park. If you don't have a boat or lakeside property your not gonna find anywhere on lake james to fish I do mean anywhere. Every square inch of the perimeter of this lake is posted with no bank access to the water. Hey...lets go to the boat launch and fish....oh I can't do that the end if you wanna fish lake james buy a boat or don't go...or go to lake norman not that far away and of your after catfish and don't have a boat they have 50 places you can fish...your welcome!
  • I was told that two nights were not guaranteed after spending 30 minutes driving between the 3 camping offices to pay for the site. After the fuss, we were told to set up camp and pay in the morning. We were then told by the camp host that we needed to pay before the morning. The facilities were great and the view from the campsites were beautiful. I definitely recommend having a reservation to guarantee not being kicked out of your site.
  • Great first visit. We kept noticing how well maintained the trails were. Rustic trails but stairs and bridges where needed.
