Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, Naples

4.6
#1 of 19 in Wildlife in Naples
was created to protect two species of cypress trees that were at risk of being wiped out in the 1940s and 50s. Today it is a National Audubon Society sanctuary. Wet prairie, pond and bald cypress, and marshlands attract regional reptiles and birds. Keep your eyes open for cottonmouth snakes and alligators that prowl the shallow waters. Stroll along the boardwalk, added in 1955, to view the varied ecosystem. • It is a natural sanctuary that has enough crocodiles, there are small and large. It is worthwhile if you want to view them up close.

  • This is a must see place to visit. Make sure you take the long path if you hope to see alligators. You need a couple of hours to enjoy the beauty and history of this swamp. It is well worth the drive. Keep a sharp eye open for the sign on the road as it is small and very easy to pass by.
  • It's $14 for adults to get in but the pass is good for two days. Part of the Florida Birding Trail so bring your binoculars. Unfortunately some of the board walk is currently under repair right now due to damage from hurricane Irma, but a large enough portion is open that the trip and admission is still worth it. A truly amazing walk through one of the world's few ancient forests.
  • One of the most beautiful places in Florida. The boardwalk takes you across a diversity of ecosystems and allows you to observe the swamp without interfering too much. Great for photographers. Worth getting the yearly pass if you live in the area as the experience changes with every season.
  • Arrived at 4:15 p.m. and they close shortly thereafter. By 4:40 p.m. there was a man telling us we had to hurry around the remainder of the boardwalk. This made it impossible to enjoy nature. It was NOT worth the money so late in the day. Otherwise, if you make a day of it, then it's a lovely bird and cypress sanctuary. We saw one alligator, a frog, several birds and a turtle digging to lay eggs, probably. Not bad for one hour.
  • Go! Go now! Though early mornings are better for birding, there was plenty to see from 9:30-12:30: 24 different species, with great looks at Anhingas, Green Herons, Downy Woodpeckers. And Blue-headed Vireos. Audubon volunteers facilitated the experience, stationed around the boardwalk to assure that folks got a good look at the fauna and flora--snakes, birds, alligators, and swamp lilies. The walk winds through cypress swamp, pine forest, prairie, and other habitats, and it offers benches and rain shelters. Handicapped-accessible. No restrooms on the boardwalk. Definitely worth a stop. Tickets bought one day are also good the next. Leave your dog at home (required) and silence your phone (recommented).
