Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, Naples

4.6
#1 of 24 in Wildlife in Naples
was created to protect two species of cypress trees that were at risk of being wiped out in the 1940s and 50s. Today it is a National Audubon Society sanctuary. Wet prairie, pond and bald cypress, and marshlands attract regional reptiles and birds. Keep your eyes open for cottonmouth snakes and alligators that prowl the shallow waters. Stroll along the boardwalk, added in 1955, to view the varied ecosystem. • We had a very nice day, but what made it worthwhile was the Rangers with binoculars who could point out Wildlife that would be easily missed if you walked slightly too fast. Binoculars are a must. We went during the dry season, so a hundred percent of the wildlife was in the wet areas. If you have small children, the zoo is more entertaining. The plant life is interesting, and the ecosystems, and it is all natural. It was interesting to see what it was like for centuries. The Naples Botanical Gardens has more to explore, if you want variety.
  • This was my first boardwalk in Florida and so far the best. I saw variety of birds, snakes, lizards and of course alligators. I was lucky to meet a big one just a few feet away from trail. You can watch Anhinga to nest & hunt fish underwater. Also it's impressive to see Bald Cypress trees which are about 500 years old. Anybody who likes natures will love it :-)
  • Wonderful get away. You can see all the different types of Everglades ecosystems in one short two-mile board walk, which would otherwise be separated by enormous distances. Like most Florida attractions, it's no enjoyable in winter or as far as possible from mid summer when it gets sweltering hot. I've been there many times and keep going back. It's a lovely outing.
  • Great facility with a super boardwalk that must be about two miles long through the swamp. We saw lots of birds, a few snakes and turtles, and one crocodile. It's well worth the entrance fee. Plus, the fees go to a great cause. If you appreciate nature, birds, and animals, you won't want to miss this place!!!
  • I wish we lived closer to this incredible park! I was a little concerned when we first started on the boardwalk. We did not see much wildlife so I started taking pictures of dragonflies; which I enjoy also, but I much prefer taking pictures of birds. It wasn't until wet got to the more shaded areas where we saw a plethora of wildlife. Painted burnings, yellow crowned herons, warblers of various types, raccoons, wood storks, egrets, little blue herons, the list goes on. Love this place!
