The Hess Collection Winery, Napa

4.5
#1 of 8 in Museums in Napa Valley
Art Museum Winery / Vineyard
A stone winery restored in a fusion of traditional and modern styles is home to The Hess Collection Winery, featuring mostly large installations along with several paintings, sculptures, and mixed media pieces. Swiss entrepreneur Donald Hess bought these vineyards in Napa Valley in 1978. Walk through the landscaped gardens, underneath wisteria vines, and among contemporary sculptures. While admiring the art, take the opportunity to sip a glass of fine cabernet sauvignon or chardonnay, and nibble on cheeses and truffles served with specialty nuts and seasonal fruit. Where to stay in Napa

To explore North America's largest wine-growing region and remain close to fine dining and shopping, consider staying at a bed and breakfast located in downtown Napa. Many centrally located inns offer spacious rooms with fireplaces, free Wi-Fi, and on-site swimming pools. If you don't mind splurging, consider staying at one of the wine valley's lavishly furnished villas, many of which feature private lakes and access to a network of scenic hiking trails. You can also go all out at a luxury resort located in a picturesque vineyard setting.

  • I almost passed this one by as I figured it would be a lot of grape and vineyard paintings but anyone who loves modern art needs to see this. First of all, it is a private collection of what Mr Hess l...  more »
  • We are not wine drinkers so we just took in the art. Impressive collection, beautifully presented over several floors.  more »

  • Great experience and amazing art and wine. Only wish weather was bit less warmer. 101 degree is not the right weather to take vineyard tour
  • Fantastic scenery and museum. History of vineyards established by the Christian Brothers in 1936 is awesome. Yes. The same religious group that actually made Christian Brothers brandy back in the day for us old timers. Truly enjoyed the wine and knowledgeable staff. One of the best cabernet and blends in Napa. Had to take some home. Thanks Gustavo!
  • Visited 16 Vinyard in the week that my family and friends visited Sonoma and Hess was the most disrespectful people I've ever met. The person pouring never explained any of the wines and actually had to ask someone else to finish our tasting because she was ignoring us. Finally, the check out lady stopped my wife for not paying after I had just paid for her. The best part of the experience is when we left.
  • Excellent stop. Great wine, great service, the art is great too! Beautiful drive up, but no views once there.
  • Fantastic wine, friendly staff, and gorgeous tasting room. I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed the Hess Tasting room during a vacation to Napa Valley. I even joined their wine club and purchased several bottles while I was there. Five starts all the way for Hess!
