Palmaz Vineyards, Napa

#21 of 76 in Wineries in Napa
Palmaz Vineyards is a Californian winery in the Napa Valley, primarily dedicated to Cabernet Sauvignon production. The estate is located on what was once the Cedar Knoll Vineyard Company, a pre prohibition winery, founded in 1881 by Henry Hagen, one of the pioneers of wine production in the Napa Valley. After prohibition the winery fell into a dilapidated state and the winery was abandoned. The Hagen House and the vineyards have since been restored after they were bought by Amalia and Julio Palmaz in 1997. The family operated winery and vineyards cultivate some 55 acres using sustainable farming practices, devote to Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling, Muscat along with smaller plantings of Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot.Palmaz Vineyards is noted for having the largest wine cave in the Napa Valley, totaling 100,000 square feet. Palmaz Vineyards' winemaking and aging takes place within the living rock of Mount George, in a multi-leveled series of tunnels and domes. The height of the wine cave is equivalent to an 18-storey building, providing the vertical range needed for true gravity-flow winemaking. Thus, the wine is not subjected to the violent agitation of pumping, which can change the wine’s intra-molecular structure. This gentle treatment allows finer nuances of flavor to develop naturally. The fermentation dome is the world’s largest underground reinforced structure. It is 72’ in diameter and 54’ high. Temperature stays constant at 60 degrees and humidity at 75%, the perfect atmosphere for aging wine. The cave houses its own water treatment plant built to comply with strict conservation guidelines.

  • More than one winery person had suggested I visit Palmaz which I did my last day in Napa. It was worth every bit of the pricey $100 fee. Every guest was an individual, the information was fantastic, i...  more »
  • Great wine tasting with a personal touch, and even welcomes children. Lovely wines accompanied by canapés. Children’s non-alcoholic wine menu is top notch service. Highly recommended.  more »
  • As you can see from the reviews, this is an amazing place. Grounds: - When you are at the gate, you have to call 'em to be let in. The drive up to the 'lobby' is a really nice drive. I should have tur...  more »

  • Wow the wine is fantastic! I love their "Gaston" Cabernet. Truly world class experience. We had Jordan as our "ambassador" who gave us an unbelievably detailed and interesting tour of the winery and grounds (and under-grounds). It's 18 stories deep in the rock! Talk about taking gravity feed winery design to the next level! Or many levels beyond normal thinking. It's just crazy cool.
  • Palma is one (top 3) of my favorite places to take my clients Anthem limousine services.
  • Best winery experience we have ever had. The grounds are gorgeous, the staff is incredibly passionate and knowledgeable, and wine is made artfully.
  • I highly suggest that you make an appointment here to taste what they have managed to bottle. I doubt that you will believe my words, but allow your palate to be your truthsayer. Not only will you be surprised and shocked by their wines that you so fortunately get to taste, but you will be glad and relieved that you took my advice because their wine is beyond wonderful and it will alter your perceptions of wine. The people of Palmaz make you feel welcome instantly and you can feel the family atmosphere that is cultivated and nourished at Palmaz. I always look forward to our visits (plural) and I am always somewhat saddened when I have to leave. This is a special family who utilizes their many talents to bring you wines that change how you view and perceive wine altogether. You will fall in love with this family and their wines.
  • The family, the winery, the wine... All three are incredible! One of the most unique and brilliant places you could hope to go. Not just in Napa, period.
