Muskegon Museum of Art, Muskegon

History Brief

At his death in 1905, lumber baron Charles H. Hackley created, through a bequest to Muskegon Public Schools,

and the expendable trust fund to purchase “paintings of the best kind” for display in Hackley Library, which was owned

and operated by the School Board. When it became apparent that a true art collection needed a home of its own, the

Muskegon Board of Education decided to honor Charles Hackley and his gift by constructing an art gallery.

Construction began in 1911 and was completed in 1912. In 1979, ground was broken for a $1.6 million addition to

the Hackley Art Gallery, funded by the L.C. & Margaret Walker Foundation. Construction was completed in 1980

and with that, the museum’s name was changed from the Hackley Art Gallery to the Muskegon Museum of Art. As

part of the Museum’s 2012 centennial celebration, a capital campaign was launched to raise funds for the future

financial security of the Museum in anticipation of its separation from Muskegon Public Schools, which was

planned beginning in 2010 and was completed June 30, 2014. Over $7.5 million has been raised so far for this fund.

  • Muskegon Museum of Art has surprisingly large collection 4 a city this size of course the city was larger before the collapse of Industry. The exhibit I focused on was Winfred Rembert and Sarah Wagner. Normally I think the $8 fee is a little high but but the second Saturday of each month is free with family activities.
  • Had the privilege of seeing the Edward S. Curtis, THE NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN EXHIBIT, at the Muskegon Museum of Art. It was excellent for lack of a better word. Educational beyond major, beautiful, and detailed. Thank you for the unforgettable displays, the maps, pictures, and the works of Mr Curtis. The work of the Muskegon Museum of Art, is so appreciated along with all that are involved to make it happen. A big thank you to my sister for asking me all. A must see. Wear comfortable shoes.
  • Lovely museum just the right size for this small city. AND, they put on an AWESOME exhibit of Curtis' Native American photographs. Included lots of insight on his style, the way he went about acquiring photos, and some good historical context to help us better "read" the photos -- yes, they were staged; but yes, too, he definitely caught something deep in the human emotions and dignity of his subjects. HURRY this exhibit ends soon I believe.
  • Very nice collection of art for a small museum. Seeing an Andrew Wyeth in person was the highlight of my visit. I'd return.
  • Very nice place. My husband and I went from the area but the kids were gone so we went to muskegon to check it out. We walked in an hour before closing and she only charged us half price
