Thought it it would be fun to go digging for diamonds, and it was. My husband and I spent a couple of hours there, no diamonds, but found what they called a large piece of hematite and some pretty jas... read more »

If you like playing in the dirt, this is the place to go. Come prepared with tools (or rent them) sunscreen and plenty of liquids. There's plenty of room to dig and you might just pull out a diamond. ... read more »
We didn't come home with diamonds, but we didn't pay a fortune to go either. Even the tools we purchased from them to dig with were reasonably priced. My 2 year old grandson enjoyed digging in the dirt and watching me dig also. I brought home a collection of pretty rocks to remember the trip by. I can't wait to go back again!!
As a handicapped person, it is difficult to go on vacation at places that the main attraction is excavating. The wide paths accommodated wheelchairs and wagons. They had several washing stations under a roof that had concrete floors and low tables. Directly behind these stations were tables that after screening you could sift through the dirt to make your diamond find. I don't know which was the best feature. Handicap accessibility, digging, washing or searching. But I appreciate that I was able to fully participate and had a fantastic time doing it. Hard when trapped in a wheelchair to feel normal. In this spot, for five hours, I felt free. I felt like a kid and I forgot all my cares. Well done!
TREASURE HUNTERS PARADISE! Camped here in a 27ft travel trailer with truck. The campground is in a beautiful setting in the forest. Sites are nice, paved, private and large with Water/Elec/Sewer H/U. Check In was easy. Stayed here 2 nights. Would have stayed longer as it was a lot of fun. State Park offers a really nice pool which is like a mini water park. Very friendly on the budget. Diamond mine is adjacent to campground facilities and is $8 all day and pool is $6 per person. We will definitely be traveling back to Crater of Diamonds. Park staff was very friendly and it was so much fun!!! Nearby grocery as well as really nice small town with great shops for tourists.
Had fun - but I think I'd plan on a shorter day next time. My 8 year old son got a bit bored after about an hour. My advice is "Don't go expecting to find a diamond." if you do you are most likely going to be disappointed. "Try to go during the cool months." We went in June & it was HOT! Can't imagine Aug. "Do some research for where to hunt." I knew there were other things to find & I thought that we would get more information about that from the employees, but they didn't really seem interested in doing much more than renting supplies & pointing you to toward the crater. Which is the main reason that I didn't give it 4 stars. We did not find a diamond. However we are not the sort of people who have that kind of luck. We really didn't find much of anything. I discovered afterward that we needed to be in specific areas to find decent size pieces of quartz or other items. Before we went I mostly focused on how to search for diamonds & what they looked like. So while I knew there are other things to find I didn't realize that they weren't everywhere. (except in very tiny pieces.)
I only give this place three stars due to the fact their are many vistors to this place and should accomadate/cater to them. It is a long walk back for drink, garbage facilities, and SHADE in the summer time because of the humid conditions. Also could dredge alittle more often because soil was hard as a rock if it hasn't rained for a while, which means little chance of finding a diamond while surface searching. Air mists are at the entrance of search area BUT should be all around the search area to me more enjoyable. Otherwise I would I did enjoy myself other than that.
