The Genesee Country Village and Museum is a 19th-century living history museum covering more than 600acre located in small hamlet of Mumford, New York, about 20mi from Rochester, New York, USA. On the museum property is the 19th-century village (The Historic Village), the John L. Wehle Gallery of Sporting Art, the Genesee Country Nature Center, the Carriage Museum, the Silver Baseball Park and the Heirloom Gardens. The facility offers numerous special events and classes throughout the year.OriginThe Genesee Country Village & Museum was conceived and founded by John L. Wehle in 1966. Jack Wehle was a collector of art and recognized that another art form, the work of regional carpenters, master builders, and housewrights, was fast disappearing from the landscape. The proposed museum was to be a village of selected examples of 19th-century Genesee Country architecture that demonstrated not only form, but also function. The buildings would be showcases of the disciplines of cabinetry, weaving, pottery and other artisans which would be displayed in appropriate cultural context.A site for this undertaking was chosen in Mumford, New York, a quiet corner in Monroe County. Much of the land, once cleared and farmed, had reverted to the wild state which greeted the first settlers. Stone fences trailing through the rolling woodlands and anchoring the hedgerows remained as evidence of the frontier farming venture. For ten years the founder and the museum director, architectural historian Stuart Bolger, guided a corps of carpenters and masons in turning the long-neglected land to new uses in the form of a recreated village. During the first decade of development, some three dozen buildings of the style, type, and function found in the rural communities of western New York were acquired and placed in the configuration of an early Genesee Country hamlet. Vintage farm structures were moved in and placed alongside the village. With care and historical respect these buildings were restored.

Took the grandchildren (12,13,15) expecting them to be totally bored. I was pleasantly surprised! The volunteer characters in period costume were extremely knowledgeable in their fields. Black-smith, ...  more »

Wonderful place to visit. Have been here many times and can't wait to visit it again. There are many historic buildings starting from pioneer times to 1900s that were physically moved from around NY (huge undertaking indeed). Volunteers are dressed in attire of those days which makes you feel you are living in history. Around 4 July they have Civil War reenactment which I highly recommend to attend. It is big with hundreds of volunteers (I am not exaggerating), horse cavalry (at least 20 or more of them), cannons, muskets fired. Reenactment is of Civil war time and battle is moving from field and into the city which is super exciting seeing a battle right inside city with buildings from those times. Blast to see!

Everything about this museum is great. They have a wide range of things to do. From special events, regular hours, food to the nature trails. They always make sure you feel welcome and treat you like family. Every one really knows their history here and is able to answer questions you have. The live museum is a great place to visit what life was like and how they lived. They have a museum also where you can see statues, art, and much more. They have a great gift shop and a great restaurant (With beer). This is a great place for all ages. If you haven't come just do it! It's worth the drive and a bang for your buck!

Any one who loves American History needs to visit. Living history of the local area by the museum interpreters always leaves you feeling both entertained and as if you learned something new. Love it so much we have been members for numerous years to save money on going as much as we did.

Such a neat place! We enjoyed the history as part of the civil war days event. This is a living museum with lots of walking & interactive thing to do. It really got my son interested in learning more about that time. Actors were in full period garb & highly knowledgeable about the era and the individual houses.

4th of July Celebration was wonderful. Parades, black powder demonstration, bands, the declaration of independence was read. As always the homes were open and the folks inside were wonderful. Just a great place of living history!
