  • As an avid hiker and outdoor enthusiast, I sometimes miss the small wonders of Arkansas being so focused on hiking the favorites. I decided to hike the first 5 miles of the Ozark Highland Trail whose trailhead begins at lake Ft. Smith State Park. The trail begins at the visitor's center, and ends 165 miles east near Harrison, AR. The first few miles that circumvent the lake are not very challenging but afford graceful undulations along the trail, crossing multiple small creek beds and streams. You have a nearly constant view of the lake for at last the first 4 miles as you hike clockwise around the north part of the lake. It is a great location for a day hike, returning back to the visitors center or one of the many camp sites for a nice sunset across the lake. Easy to get to off US Hwy 49 to enter the park. Hit the trails!
  • This is a beautiful lake, and the boat rentals are a good deal. However, you are not permitted to swim in the lake because it's Fort Smith's drinking supply. This is ridiculous - on a hot summer day you are unable to jump in and cool off. For that reason, I would recommend looking elsewhere, however if you just want to fish or boat/kayak this is your place.
  • My family has been renting a batch of cabins every year for the last few years. We always have a great time. Depending on what you want, the poor cell service and lack of WiFi is either a major drawback or major bonus. The cabins show a little wear but are still very nice. You can canoe or kayak at the lake, hike the trails, or just relax and play some games outside.
  • Awesome awesome state park. Has a little of everything. There pool is awesome!! Mountain bike trail is awesome and top shelf hiking.
  • We only drove through the park, but we would love to bring our family back here with our RV. The grounds are well maintained. The welcome center is huge and contains a store and a museum.
